Description

History and background

The Volkswagen Karmann-Ghia 2+2 Coupe was developed in the 1950s as a civilian-oriented coupe based on the technology of the Volkswagen Beetle. The model resulted from the collaboration between Volkswagen, coachbuilder Karmann and the Italian design house Ghia. The low, streamlined design gave the Karmann-Ghia a different character from the regular Volkswagens of the period, while the technical foundation remained familiar. As a result, the Volkswagen Karmann-Ghia 2+2 Coupe occupied a position between accessible engineering and a more exclusive body style.

The production of the Karmann-Ghia ran from 1955 to 1974. During that period both the Type 14 coupe and convertible appeared, and later the larger Type 34. The car remained in production for a long time because it had a recognizable place within Volkswagen's range without directly competing with sports cars. The 1974 Volkswagen Karmann-Ghia 2+2 Coupe is among the last years of production of the model, and thus falls at the end of this production series.

The Volkswagen Karmann-Ghia 2+2 Coupe in this version has a significantly different technical interpretation from standard. The basis of the model makes it suitable for such modifications, as the body and chassis traditionally have a relatively simple design. For this very reason, specimens with drastic engineering changes are not uncommon within the enthusiasm surrounding this model.

Characteristics and special features

This Volkswagen Karmann-Ghia 2+2 Coupe is equipped with a Porsche 2.2-liter engine with 48 Weber IDA carburetors and SMD ignition, good for about 180 horsepower. The car has a Rancho gearbox with shiftlock, disc brakes all around and Porsche 17-inch Cup wheels. In addition, Porsche 914 seats were fitted and the interior was reupholstered by Newburry. Four-point seat belts have also been fitted.

The electrical system has been completely renewed and redone. Included are a GPS speedometer, an adjustable shift light and a line-lock, which allows only the front brakes to be locked via a button on the shift lever. The bodywork is non-welded and completely set in two-component epoxy. The car is registered in the Netherlands and has historic blue plates.

The Volkswagen Karmann-Ghia 2+2 Coupe has had a total investment of 60,000 euros. The car was driven after the engine had only idled when purchased. Then the necessary test miles were driven. Due to the components used and the lowered front axle, the car has a distinct technical set-up within the Karmann-Ghia platform.

Summary

This 1974 Volkswagen Karmann-Ghia 2+2 Coupe combines the well-known Karmann-Ghia body with highly modified technology, including a Porsche 2.2-liter engine, Rancho gearbox, disc brakes all around and various Porsche components. The car is registered in the Netherlands and has historic blue plates. To get a good idea of the lot, we advise you to come to the viewing day.
