History and background
Teal was a British manufacturer dedicated to classic replicas and light sports cars, with a design heavily inspired by Bugatti models. Affiliated with Trafford Engineering Automotive Ltd, the brand was developed by Ian Foster and Bob Jones. Production took place in small numbers; a total of 160 Teal variants were built between 1981 and 2000, in various versions such as the Type 35, 43, 44 and 59. The Teal Type 35 / 43 fits within that tradition as a hand-built, classic-line-based open two-seater.
The history of this Teal Type 35 / 43 goes back to 1984, when Bob Jones began building his own Teal. The car began as a Teal 35 boattail and later received a transformation to Type 43, inspired by the Bugatti 43. This included the choice of the distinctive "dickey seat" rear instead of the usual boattail. The project had a long restoration history and was further developed over several years, with the car finally emerging in this form.
The Teal Type 35 / 43 thus stands in a line of craftsman-built replicas distinguished by individual workmanship and limited numbers. Within the Teal program, the combination of a proprietary chassis, manual construction and freedom of choice in technique were a key feature. This very method of working made each one unique to a certain extent.
Characteristics and features
This Teal Type 35 / 43 has an all-aluminum body. It features a 2.5-liter six-cylinder inline engine, a four-speed manual transmission and overdrive. In addition, there is precision tuning. The car is MOT-approved and has undergone a restoration period of over five years.
A special feature of this Teal Type 35 / 43 is the combination of the aluminum body with the six-cylinder engine, which makes the car distinctive within the Teal range. The car is 99.9% in showroom condition and much documentation is present in two binders. There is also an extensive historical report on the car, detailing its previous history and restoration. The two Stromberg carburetors still show some problems.
The choice of a Type 43 body means that this Teal Type 35 / 43 differs from the more common boattail version. This puts the car in line with the brand's Bugatti-inspired line, but with its own execution and finish. The car is considered a unique specimen within the Teal world.
Summary
The Teal Type 35 / 43 is a rare, hand-built specimen with an aluminum body, a 2.5-liter six-cylinder inline engine, a four-speed transmission with overdrive and an extensive documented history. The car is MOT approved, largely in showroom condition and is a uniquely executed model within the Teal family. To get a good impression of the lot we advise you to come to the viewing day.
