Description

History and background

The BMW 3.0 CS is part of the E9 series, introduced in 1971 as the successor to the BMW 2800 CS. This generation of coupes was developed at a time when BMW was emphatically positioning itself as a manufacturer of sporty, technically sophisticated cars with a clear emphasis on driving characteristics and design. The BMW 3.0 CS occupied an important place in this with the combination of a six-cylinder in-line engine with an elegant bodywork that became strongly defining the image of BMW in the 1970s.

The E9 series quickly gained a special status within the range. Not only because of its design and technical set-up, but also because of its connection to BMW's motorsport activities. From the E9 later emerged the well-known homologation and racing versions, including the 3.0 CSL, which further strengthened the model's reputation. The BMW 3.0 CS thus became more than just a regular coupe; the model formed a link between BMW's classic grand touring philosophy and the sporty course the brand continued to develop in those years.

The 1973 BMW 3.0 CS belongs to the last production years of this body line. By then, the E9 had become a recognizable presence within the upper segment of sporty European coupes. The combination of build quality, engine refinement and relatively exclusive production made the BMW 3.0 CS a model with a firm place in the brand's history.

Characteristics and special features

This BMW 3.0 CS is equipped with a 3.0-liter six-cylinder in-line engine that produces 180 hp. Combined with the manual transmission and power steering, the car is set up for direct handling and a high degree of control. This is characteristic of the BMW 3.0 CS: a technical set-up that matched the sporty nature of the model in its time, without abandoning the comfort that came with a gran turismo coupe.

The car is in excellent condition and has been meticulously maintained. The blue paint is still present and the interior exudes classic luxury. With an odometer reading of 71,295 km, this is a specimen that clearly falls within the preserved generation of the BMW 3.0 CS. The combination of execution, finish and historical positioning makes this model recognizable as part of the more sought-after E9 series.

Within BMW's model history, the BMW 3.0 CS also occupies a special place as a collector's item. The rarity of the E9 coupes, combined with their role in the development of later BMW sports models, has given the model lasting relevance. This applies not only to the motorsport context, but also to the broader appeal of BMW in the 1970s, in which the 3.0 CS was one of the brand's clearest representatives in the upper coupe segment.

Summary

The 1973 BMW 3.0 CS is an E9 coupe with a 3.0-liter six-cylinder in-line engine rated at 180 hp, manual transmission and power steering. The example is in excellent condition, has been meticulously maintained and has driven 71,295 km. To get a good idea of the lot, we recommend coming to the viewing day.
