History and background
The Jaguar XK 120 SE appeared in 1948 as the successor to a brand that until then had been known primarily for pre-war luxury cars. With the XK120, Jaguar quickly put itself firmly on the map as a producer of sports cars. The designation 120 referred to a then very high top speed of 120 miles per hour, or 193 km/h. This made the Jaguar XK 120, at its introduction, a car that stood out in its class for performance and technology.
Production of the Jaguar XK120 ran until 1954, in coupe, open- and later fixed-head versions. During that period, the model grew into one of the best-known British sports cars of its time. The combination of streamlined bodywork, a modern six-cylinder and relatively broad usability made the XK120 an important export model for Jaguar. The SE version stood for Special Equipment and was intended as a version with sportier specification.
The 1954 Jaguar XK 120 SE falls at the end of the model series. This makes this version one of the last builds of the XK120, a type that laid the foundation for the later XK150 and indirectly for the Jaguar E-type. By this time, the XK engine family had already made a name for itself with its combination of agility, engineering and use in both road and racing applications.
Characteristics and features
The Jaguar XK 120 SE is equipped with the familiar 3.4-liter six-in-line engine with twin SU carburetors. In this version, the engine delivers 120 kW, good for 160 hp. The SE specification brings additional power and sportier details. The car features a mechanical manual transmission to match the character of this model.
This Jaguar XK120 SE is in exceptionally good technical condition. The engine runs beautifully and the shifting is experienced as direct and mechanical. The car is cosmetically in driver's condition and has a deep black paint. With this, the Jaguar XK 120 SE presents itself as a specimen that reflects the utilitarian approach to classic sports cars of the period. The combination of the SE trim, the 3.4-liter engine and the finish in black makes this a recognizable appearance within the XK series.
The Jaguar XK 120 SE was built at a time when Jaguar was building international prestige with relatively compact, technically advanced sports cars. In this, the XK120 was one of the most important models, partly because of its long production run and visible influence on later Jaguars. The SE variants in particular are relevant within the series because of their sharper finish and sportier tuning.
Summary
The 1954 Jaguar XK 120 SE is among the final builds of a model series that established Jaguar internationally as a sports car brand. With its 3.4-liter six-cylinder, SE specification, exceptional technical condition and black finish, this is a distinctive example from the period in which the XK120 built its reputation.
