Description

History and background

The Jaguar XK 150 appeared in 1957 as the third and final evolution of Jaguar's XK series, following the XK 120 and XK 140. Whereas the XK 120 was still styled strongly from postwar sports car development, the Jaguar XK 150 took on a more clearly developed character with a wider body, improved brakes and a more mature finish. The model became available as a Fixed Head Coupe, Drophead Coupe and Open Two Seater, with the open versions highly prized in the marketplace for their combination of elegance and sporting engineering.

Within the XK range, the Jaguar XK 150 occupied an important place as it marked the transition to Jaguar's signature combination of performance and practicality. The car remained true to the six-cylinder XK concept with dual overhead camshafts that had defined Jaguar's reputation as a sports car brand since the XK 120. For the XK 150, the bodywork was further modernized and the fenders and front end, among others, received a more streamlined design. By 1960, the model was in its final years of production, just before the E-Type made its debut in 1961 and largely took over the spotlight in the sports car segment.

The Jaguar XK 150 was produced in several versions and today is considered one of the last classic Jaguars with a distinct 1950s look. The Drophead Coupe was one of the more luxurious and user-friendly open variants in the model series, due in part to its fixed windows, better-finished hood construction and emphasis on touring comfort. That very combination makes the Jaguar XK 150 a model that has retained a firm place within both the historical context of Jaguar's sports car history and within the contemporary classic car market.

Characteristics and particulars

This Jaguar XK 150 Drophead has been invested to the tune of approximately $150,000 in recent years, with available bills present. The car is thus targeted for use as a driving classic and has actually been used with high mileage during that period. The Jaguar XK 150 has also been driven in the recent period, so the model has maintained a use-oriented character.

The overdrive works nicely, the driveline shows no vibrations while driving and the engine picks up well. The sheet metal is cleanly done. The interior is nicely finished and retains a lived-in character, befitting an older classic with a clear history of use. Within the context of the Jaguar XK 150, this is relevant, as it is precisely the combination of long-range capability, open bodywork and mechanical refinement that sets the model apart from many of its contemporaries.

The Jaguar XK 150 was considered the most advanced XK in its time, with further improved handling and braking technology over its predecessors. The Drophead Coupe shape thereby offered a balance between sporty proportions and more comfort-oriented execution. The car is now for sale due to the current owner's collection being thinned out.

Summary

This 1960 Jaguar XK 150 Drophead represents the final phase of Jaguar's XK series, combining the distinctive 1950s style with a utilitarian history. The documentation present, the investments made and the aforementioned driving characteristics give it a clear profile within the classic segment. To get a good idea of the lot, we recommend coming to the viewing day.
