History and background
The MG F-Type Magna appeared in 1932 as an important model within early MG production. With this type, MG introduced a six-cylinder for the first time, positioning the brand more emphatically in the compact sporting car segment. The MG F-Type Magna is consistent with the period in which MG built its reputation with light, characterful sports cars that were technically simple but purposefully built.
The F-Type Magna came in several body styles and stood out for its long hood and tilted grille. This clearly distinguished the MG F-Type Magna from the mainstream compact cars of its time. Its proportions and technology gave the model an early place within prewar sports car history. The nickname little "Blue Train" refers to its resemblance in appearance to the famous Bentley, without the MG F-Type Magna being a direct derivative of it.
The six-cylinder inline engine with 1,285 cc made the MG F-Type Magna a remarkable appearance within the MG range. For MG, this was a move that had both technical and commercial significance, as the model offered a different character from the frequently used four-cylinders of the same period. The MG F-Type Magna thus became a car that occupied a recognizable position not only within the marque, but also in the wider market of early sports cars.
Characteristics and features
This MG F-Type Magna Salonette is a rare version of the type. About 390 examples of this body style were manufactured new, while fewer than 10 are known today. Based on the F-Type registry, this may be the oldest original Salonette in existence. This is a version with matching numbers, underscoring the historical consistency of the vehicle.
The car has been fully restored in a time-correct color scheme and comes with an official "Pass-out Voucher" dated January 9, 1932, as well as an original "MG Magna Motoring" brochure. The MG F-Type Magna features the side-smooth running and torquey six-in-line engine, mated to a competition-derived gearbox. The combination of this technology largely determines the car's character and is in keeping with the typical pre-war sports car experience associated with this model.
The 1,285cc engine produces a distinctive amount of sound, which is characteristic of the MG F-Type Magna and fits well with the model's sporty character. This Salonette also has a FIVA passport and is suitable for participation in a concours d'elegance. Within a collection, an MG F-Type Magna Salonette occupies a distinct place due to its rarity, documentation and body style.
Summary
The 1932 MG F-Type Magna Salonette is a rare and historically interesting version within the early MG six-cylinder line. With its matching numbers, complete restoration in time-correct color scheme, accompanying documentation and FIVA passport, this MG F-Type Magna represents an exceptional example of a pre-war sports car.
