History and background
The Porsche 968 Cabriolet appeared in the early 1990s as an open variant of the 968, a model that, within the Porsche program, was the last and further developed offspring of the transaxle-mounted line. That architecture, with the engine placed at the front and the gearbox at the rear, had previously been used on the 924, 944 and 968 and was intended to achieve favorable weight distribution. The Porsche 968 Cabriolet thus built on a technical family that distinguished itself from the rear-engined cars with which Porsche was most strongly associated worldwide.
The 968 itself was introduced as the successor to the 944 and gained an important role within the range in 1992. The model used a further developed inline four-cylinder engine and was marketed as a relatively refined, utilitarian sports car. The Porsche 968 Cabriolet came at a time when open sports cars had a permanent place at Porsche, alongside traditional coupes. Within that context, the 968 Cabriolet occupied a position as an open version of a model that was built less in number than the more common 911 variants.
Production of the Porsche 968 ran from 1991 through 1995, with the convertible version making up a portion of the total numbers. In absolute terms, the 968 remained a relatively rare model, in part because the market changed around this time and Porsche began to focus increasingly on other model ranges. This makes the Porsche 968 Cabriolet a representative of the last phase of Porsche's transaxle generation, which technically has its own place within the brand's history.
Characteristics and special features
The Porsche 968 Cabriolet is distinguished by the combination of open bodywork and transaxle technology. That set-up gave the 968 series a specific place within the Porsche range and resulted in a different technical approach from the 911. The 968 used a 3.0-liter four-cylinder, one of the largest mass-produced four-cylinder engines of its time. Among the technical development of the model was variable valve timing, which contributed to the modernization of the powertrain.
Within the model series, the Porsche 968 Cabriolet is recognizable for its alignment between sporty engineering and usable open use. The 1992 model year designation places this example in the early production years of the 968 series. In doing so, the Cabriolet was delivered as a full open variant, not a later conversion, and is consistent with the way Porsche offered multiple model series in coupe and convertible form during that period. The driving condition of this vehicle has been recorded. On this Porsche 968 Cabriolet, the airbag warning light remains on. It is recommended that the cause of this be investigated further.
Summary
The 1992 Porsche 968 Cabriolet belongs to Porsche's later transaxle models and occupies a distinct position of its own within brand history. This is an open version of a relatively rare model series, with a technical character that differs from the better-known 911 line. The Porsche 968 Cabriolet is drivable.
