History and background
The Mercedes-Benz 200 GE belongs to the first generation of the Geländewagen, known internally as the W460. Developed in the 1970s in cooperation with Steyr-Daimler-Puch, this model was launched in 1979 as an off-road vehicle with a clear focus on robustness, simplicity and versatility. The Mercedes-Benz 200 GE occupied a special place within the delivery program as an entry-level version with a gasoline engine, alongside the diesel variants and the more powerful six-cylinder models that became available later.
In the 1980s, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class evolved from a purely functional off-road vehicle to a model with broader versatility, without substantially changing its original angular design and ladder-chassis setup. The 200 GE fits into that phase of the model: still strongly related to its utilitarian origins, but delivered in a version that also offered a more common characteristic on the road. The 1987 model year falls at a time when the W460 had by now become firmly established within the Mercedes-Benz range, both civilian and for special applications.
The Mercedes-Benz 200 GE was delivered in relatively limited numbers compared to later G-Class generations. Within the early G-Series, the gasoline four-cylinder versions were less numerous than the diesel versions, while the heavier engine versions were more often chosen for more intensive use. This is precisely why the 200 GE occupies a specific position within model history: an early G-Class with a four-cylinder gasoline engine, from the period when the name Mercedes-Benz G still mainly stood for a functional off-road vehicle.
Characteristics and special features
The Mercedes-Benz 200 GE is technically recognizable by its simple construction and classic body with rigid axles and a robust chassis. This made the model suitable for a variety of applications, from off-road work to private use. The angular body and high seating position are characteristic of the first generation G-Class and have remained part of the model identity ever since. With the 200 GE, the emphasis was less on performance than on reliability, ease of operation and employability.
A special aspect of the early Mercedes-Benz 200 GE is the combination of a traditional off-road vehicle body with a gasoline engine in a segment in which diesel engines were often preferred. Thus, this type represents a specific phase in the development of the G-Class, in which Mercedes-Benz offered different drive variants side by side. The year of construction, 1987, places this example in that early period of the model series. The car is in driveable condition and both the interior and exterior look cared for.
Summary
The 1987 Mercedes-Benz 200 GE is an early example of the first generation G-Class, with the classic W460 body and a distinct place within Mercedes-Benz's model history. The car is in drivable condition and both the interior and exterior look cared for. To get a good idea of the lot we recommend you come to the viewing day.
