Description

History and background

The Austin-Healey 3000 MK II A is part of the final development phase of the major Austin-Healey models, built between 1959 and 1967. Within that period, various technical changes followed each other in rapid succession. In March 1961, the Austin-Healey 3000 Mark II appeared as a further development of the earlier 3000, with standard three SU HS4 carburetors and a modified camshaft. The 3000 series was a fixture within the British sports car segment in the 1960s, with a clear emphasis on export, especially to the United States.

The Austin-Healey 3000 MKII A appeared in 1962 as the successor to the MKII. For this version, the number of carburetors was reduced to two SU HS6 carburetors, in part because the three HS4 carburetors were difficult to synchronize. The MKII A came as a two-seat BN7 and a four-seat BJ7. In doing so, the Austin-Healey 3000 MKII A combined the traditional long nose and muscular proportions of the earlier Healeys with further refinement of practicality.

Within the history of the Austin-Healey 3000, the MKII A is often considered one of the most recognizable versions. The round windshield, pivoting windows and convertible top without a separate frame are distinctive elements of this version. The classic dashboard was also retained for the MKII A, before it was later modified on the MKIII. Thus, the Austin-Healey 3000 MKII A represents a transitional phase within the model series.

Characteristics and features

This Austin-Healey 3000 MKII A has been owned by the same owner for decades. In the early 1990s, the car was completely restored. This included making the engine suitable for use on unleaded gasoline and strengthening the chassis. The restoration was documented in a photo book. After the restoration, the car was carefully maintained and used for various trips abroad.

The car is equipped with 15-inch 72-spoke wire wheels, a Moto-Lita leather sport steering wheel, a Works gearshift with overdrive switch, Securon multi-point belts, a fire extinguisher and a VDO vacuum gauge. Under the hood include an electric cooling fan, aluminum valve cover, high output Flame Thrower coil and several other upgrades. The underside is in body color. The fits of the body parts are very good.

Summary

The 1962 Austin-Healey 3000 MKII A is an early version of the final development phase of the 3000 series, with the distinctive body elements of this version and various technical and practical modifications. This example was restored in the 1990s, then long-term maintained and fitted with several periodic and functional improvements. To get a good idea of the lot, we recommend coming to the viewing day.
