History and background
The BMW i8 was introduced in 2014 as a production model within BMW's i sub-brand, which was created for electrified mobility and a different approach to sports cars. The BMW i8 combines a combustion engine with electric propulsion and was positioned as a plug-in hybrid sports car, with an emphasis on efficiency, lightweight construction and a different technical design from regular BMW models.
For the development of the BMW i8, BMW built on earlier studies such as the Vision EfficientDynamics. The production model was given a very recognizable design with low roofline, upward-hinged doors and a body made of several parts made of plastics and reinforced fiber materials. In market position, the BMW i8 stood between conventional sports coupes and more exclusive hybrid models, where technology and presentation were emphatic parts of the concept. Production continued until 2020; during that period, the BMW i8 remained relatively rare, partly due to the specific combination of powertrain and construction.
The 2015 BMW i8 belongs to the early production period. That is a phase when the model was already fully established in the market, but still remained close to the original introduction idea. For auction purposes, this is relevant because early examples of the BMW i8 are often seen as representative of the first design and technical implementation of this model.
Characteristics and special features
The BMW i8 is distinguished by its plug-in hybrid powertrain and its design tailored accordingly. The combination of a compact fuel engine, electric assistance and a lightweight structure was exceptional within the sports car segment at the time of its introduction. Also playing an important role was the use of BMW's eDrive technology, emphasizing a direct link between energy management and driving experience. The BMW i8 came with a six-speed automatic transmission, coupled with a system that distributes drive to the front and rear wheels.
A feature of the BMW i8 is the use of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic for the passenger cell, combined with aluminum in the chassis and suspension. This construction was not common in this price range at the time and gave the model its own technical identity. The styling matched this, with a low front end, short overhangs and a pronounced aerodynamic line. This made the BMW i8 not only a hybrid sports car, but also a demonstration of BMW's development direction at the time in terms of alternative propulsion and materials.
This 2015 example is in clean condition and drives well. The car is delivered with a Dutch license plate. This makes the BMW i8 as a lot instantly recognizable within the model's early build years.
Summary
The 2015 BMW i8 is an early version of BMW's plug-in hybrid sports car, with a distinctive technical set-up and a notable place within the brand's model history. The example is in clean condition, drives well and comes with a Dutch registration plate. To get a good impression of the lot we advise you to come to the viewing day.
