History and background
The Maserati GranSport appeared in 2004 as a further development of the Maserati 4200 GT Coupe and formed a sharper and sportier variant within the range. The model was positioned as a two-seater GT with clear focus on performance and appearance, at a time when Maserati had found a new direction under the influence of Ferrari engineering. The Maserati GranSport thus fits into the phase in which the brand combined its classic grand tourer character with modern powertrain technology and a distinctly Italian design.
The 4.2-liter V8 of the Maserati GranSport was developed during the period when Maserati was part of Ferrari, which is reflected in its technical affinity. The powertrain also received a sporty interpretation with a Cambiocorsa sequential gearbox with shift paddles on the steering wheel, derived directly from Ferrari's F1 technology. With a power output of 401 hp, acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds and a top speed of 290 km/h, the Maserati GranSport emphatically positioned itself as a thoroughbred sports car.
About 8,600 examples of the Maserati GranSport were built, making the model's production relatively limited. This adds to the car's place within modern Maserati history. This example was delivered new in Japan and has been registered in the Netherlands since May 18, 2024, which marks the concrete use trajectory of this Maserati GranSport.
Characteristics and special features
The Maserati GranSport is distinguished by various carbon accents and by the distinctive seats in carbon-look leather as supplied for the GranSport. The seats are equipped with memory and heating. In addition, the car is equipped with climat control (ECC) and a JBL audio system. This combination is in line with the Maserati GranSport's approach as a sports car with a certain level of comfort and equipment.
Technically, the Maserati GranSport is recognizable by the combination of the atmospheric 4.2-liter V8 and the sequential Cambiocorsa transmission. That combination gave the model a distinct character within the market of sporty coupes of the period, when many competitors opted for conventional automatics or manual transmissions. In the Maserati GranSport, on the contrary, the emphasis on gearshifters, Ferrari-derived technology and relatively limited production forms an important part of its identity.
The Maserati GranSport is among the models that, by their technical basis and design, clearly separate luxury grand tourer and pure sports car. The presence of the mentioned equipment and the specific design of the seats are in line with the factory specifications of this model and underline the distinction within the 4200 family. No maintenance or other history is present with the car. The technical condition of the vehicle is therefore unknown. Before returning the car to regular service, it should first be extensively serviced and technically inspected.
