Description

History and background

The 1924 Paige-Detroit 25720 belongs to the period when Paige-Detroit positioned itself in the upper-middle segment of the American car market. The Paige brand, based in Detroit, built cars in the 1920s that were distinguished by relatively well-kept workmanship and an extensive delivery program. In those years, competition in the United States was fierce, with manufacturers competing on technology, comfort and appearance. Within those offerings, the 6-70 constituted the largest model Paige could supply.

The Paige-Detroit 25720 was designed as a Sedan and was powered by a 5.4-liter six-cylinder with a stated output of 70 horsepower. For a 1924 car, that was a considerable value, putting the model in the upper echelons of the range at the time. The combination of six-cylinder technology, spacious bodywork and extensive equipment options matched the demand for comfortable passenger cars in the interwar period. The 6-70 came in several body styles and versions, with the sedan being one of the more common and useful variants.

This Paige-Detroit 25720 also has a long, traceable history. The car was purchased in the United States in October 2008 from an owner who had owned the car since 1968. On May 11, 2011, the car was registered in the Netherlands. The available documentation and accompanying brochure details provide insight into the original specification of the Paige-Detroit 25720, including the equipment and option package available at the time.

Characteristics and Details

The Paige-Detroit 25720 has never been restored and is for the most part still in its original paint. In a few places the paint has been touched up while maintaining the authentic look. The interior, headliner, wood floorboards, carpet and leatherette on roof and running boards are also present. The car is equipped with a working engageable compressor connected through the transmission and intended to inflate tires in case of a flat.

A special aspect of this Paige-Detroit 25720 is that the nickel work was redone in England by Genius of the Lamp. The original brochure shows that the Sedan came standard with a gas gauge, clock, front cigar lighter, sun visor, heater and exit light above the rear right running board. In addition, the interior includes a rear smoking kit and a vanity kit. The car is also equipped with the De Luxe option package, with double bumpers front and rear, a nickel-plated radiator with Motometer temperature gauge, two spare wheels with covers left and right front, a rear luggage rack, automatic windshield wipers, and a brake and tail light.

Between 2008 and 2011, various maintenance and preservation work was carried out. These included attention to the tires, exhaust, gasoline tank, alternator, radiator and crankcase. The original wooden centers of the wheels were treated with linseed oil and in 2022 the car received a service with new hoses, spark plugs, belt and battery. The car is in original and good condition, befitting a vehicle that has largely retained its authentic presentation. A few instruments are not currently functioning, including the odometer and speedometer. This does not detract from the car's character as a particularly original 1920s example.

Summary

The Paige-Detroit 25720 is a 1924 6-70 Sedan with a 5.4-liter six-cylinder, a long documented history and a largely original presentation. The combination of original parts, exceptional factory equipment, the De Luxe package and preservation work done makes this Paige-Detroit 25720 a distinctive example of a 1920s American premium car.
