History and background
The Jaguar E-Type was presented in 1961 as a rear-wheel-drive grand tourer and initially appeared as a two-seat coupe and two-seat convertible. The 2+2 variant of the coupe followed later. Within the model series, the early versions were later referred to as Series I and Series 1½, after which the E-Type was succeeded by the Series II and Series III. As such, the Jaguar E-Type Series III V12 2+2 represents the culmination of an important development line within the model program.
The Series I featured the 3.8-liter six-cylinder also used in the XK150S, with 265 horsepower and a top speed of 241 mph. For the Series III, the 5.3-liter twelve-cylinder became available, replacing the previous engines. With an output of 272 hp, performance remained on par, despite the E-Type's increased size. The twelve-cylinder was developed to face both American V8 competition and twelve-cylinder technology from Italy. This gave the Jaguar E-Type Series III V12 2+2 a clear technical and market focus.
The combination of long hood, low body and a strong focus on performance made the E-Type one of Jaguar's best-known models. Its reputation was further enhanced by the appreciation the model received in the 1960s. Within that context, the Jaguar E-Type Series III V12 2+2 occupies a special place as the variant in which comfort, extra utility space and the larger V12 came together.
Characteristics and special features
In order to accommodate the large V12, the Jaguar E-Type Series III V12 2+2 was given a longer wheelbase and the coupe was fitted as standard as a 2+2. The car basically offers four seats, with the rear two seats being mostly of limited use and in practice serving in part as additional luggage space when the seatback is folded down. The Series III can be identified by a wider body, longer doors and additional air intakes under the grille and in the hood.
The exterior presentation also differs markedly from earlier series. The Jaguar E-Type Series III V12 2+2 received "disc wheels," slightly flared fenders all around and a grille in the Jaguar-named "birdcage" design. At the rear, the V12 logo was added. The combination of these elements gives the Series III a different appearance from previous versions and is in keeping with the technical modifications required for the twelve-cylinder.
This example is equipped with an automatic transmission, standard power steering, electronic ignition and ventilated brake discs. 5182 left-hand drive examples of the Series III V12 coupe were built. This makes the Jaguar E-Type Series III V12 2+2 one of the less common variants within the model series.
This Jaguar E-Type Series III V12 2+2 is in clean condition. The car has a Dutch license plate. The engine runs, but due to a very long period of inactivity, the car needs to be completely checked before it is put back into service. In addition, leaks in the fuel system are noticeable.
Summary
The 1971 Jaguar E-Type Series III V12 2+2 is the twelve-cylinder version of the E-Type, with longer wheelbase, 2+2 layout and distinctive Series III details. This example features an automatic transmission, power steering, electronic ignition and ventilated brake discs. To get a good idea of the lot, we recommend coming to the viewing day.
