History and background
The Rolls-Royce Phantom V represents, within the Phantom series, an important chapter in the brand's postwar history. The Phantoms were always Rolls-Royce's top models, but immediately after World War II the market left no room for a regular Phantom model in the price list. As a result, the Phantom IV remained reserved for royal houses and government leaders. Not until 1959 did the Phantom return as a model that could be purchased by a broader, very wealthy clientele. The Phantom V also saw the first use of the 6,230 cc V8 engine, which was also used in the Silver Cloud II in the same year.
As was customary with Rolls-Royce, the body of the Phantom V was not built by the factory itself, but by a coachbuilder. Most examples received bodywork from Mulliner Park Ward, a builder affiliated with the factory. For a more exclusive version, customers turned to James Young, an independent coachbuilder who designed a particularly stately body under the code name PV22. The Rolls-Royce Phantom V James Young is among those less common and more distinctive versions within the model.
The 1964 model year falls in the period when the Phantom V was already well established as a representative limousine. The model was delivered primarily as a custom car, combining the technical basis of Rolls-Royce with body and interior solutions from individual coachbuilders. As a result, no Phantom V is completely identical to another, and this is all the more true of the James Young versions.
Characteristics and special features
This Rolls-Royce Phantom V James Young comes in a two-tone color scheme of black and dark red, designated Maroon, with a matching red leather interior. Between the front seats and the rear compartment is a partition with multiple amenities. The car features two fold-out seats, allowing a total of seven people to be seated. For the rear passengers, there are also two fold-out tables and a drinks cabinet with ornate glassware.
In the partition wall is a classic Tiffany & Co clock and a monitor with video/CD/MP3 player. The armrest between the rear backrests provides access to a storage area with an original vanity set. When that armrest is folded up, a corded telephone and several control units for the audio equipment are visible. A radio and its own climate control system are installed on the left and right rear seats. This equipment fits the character of the Rolls-Royce Phantom V James Young as a chauffeur's car with an emphasis on comfort and seclusion for the rear passengers.
In the recent past, this Phantom V has had its engine swapped for one that has been completely overhauled and fitted with new cylinder heads. The car comes with numerous maintenance bills, appraisal reports and some original brochures. The original manual with the original wiring diagrams is also present.
Summary
The 1964 Rolls-Royce Phantom V James Young is a PV22 James Young body within the Phantom series, with an elaborate rear compartment layout, a two-tone finish and documentation including manual, brochures and bills. The car is registered in Belgium. To get a good idea of the lot we recommend you come to the viewing day.
