Description

History and background

The Mercedes-Benz 220 SE Heckflosse belongs to the W111 generation, which Mercedes-Benz introduced from 1959 as a successor to the Ponton models. The nickname "Heckflosse" refers to the subtle tail fins at the rear, a form element known at the time primarily from American automotive styling, but at Mercedes-Benz applied primarily functionally as a parking reference from the driver's position. The W111 series marked an important step for Mercedes-Benz toward more modern safety and comfort features, while maintaining the traditional build quality and conservative brand image.

The 220 SE was, within the series, the version with a six-cylinder injection engine and constituted a more technically advanced variant of the 220 S. The combination of the 2.2-liter engine with mechanical fuel injection made the 220 SE one of the better-positioned models in the upper mid-range segment of its time. Mercedes-Benz delivered the W111 in several body styles, including sedan, coupe and convertible, with the sedan representing by far the largest volume. Production of the Heckflosse sedans ran until the mid-1960s, after which the succeeding W108/W109 generation took over.

A 1964 Mercedes-Benz 220 SE Heckflosse falls within the later production period of this type. In those years, the model was by now a familiar sight on the European street scene and was known as a representative and technically sophisticated family and business car. Within classic Mercedes-Benz history, the 220 SE occupies a place as a link between the pre-war and immediate post-war construction tradition on the one hand, and the more modern luxury saloons of the 1960s on the other.

Characteristics and particulars

This Mercedes-Benz 220 SE Heckflosse is in running condition. Present with the car are several invoices from the past, as well as a work manual. In addition, the car still has its original Becker Monza radio with cassette player. Such accessories fit the period in which Mercedes-Benz emphasized solid workmanship and integrated extra equipment.

The fabric interior has apparently been renewed. Within the W111 series, the interior design is characterized by its sober, horizontal design and clear instrument layout, with emphasis on overview and ease of use. The Mercedes-Benz 220 SE Heckflosse combines this typical sixties design with the technical signature of the injection version, which set the model apart within the Mercedes-Benz lineup at the time.

Summary

The 1964 Mercedes-Benz 220 SE Heckflosse is a representative version of the W111 series, with a place in Mercedes-Benz's development towards the luxury sedan of the sixties. The car is in running condition, has several historical invoices and a work manual, and is equipped with an original Becker Monza radio with cassette player. The cloth interior appears to have been updated. To get a good impression of the lot we advise you to come to the viewing day.
