History and background
The Mercedes-Benz 220S belongs to the W180 series, also known internally as the "Ponton" generation, introduced by Mercedes-Benz in the mid-1950s. This model series marked an important step in the brand's postwar development, featuring a self-supporting body and a construction that clearly differed from the separate chassis construction of earlier Mercedes models. The Mercedes-Benz 220S positioned itself in the upper mid-range segment and was intended as a comfortable, technically sophisticated automobile for private and business use.
Within the 220 series, the Mercedes-Benz 220S occupied a place between the simpler variants and the more powerfully powered versions. In this generation, the S designation stood for a better-equipped model with a six-cylinder in-line engine and dual carburetion in the standard version of the period. The W180 series was available in several body styles, including four-door sedan and coupe, and was produced until the arrival of succeeding generations in the early 1960s. The 220S is thus representative of the period in which Mercedes-Benz continued to build its reputation for solidity, engineering and workmanship.
The 1959 Mercedes-Benz 220S falls into the late production years of this series, a phase in which the Pontoon models had an established position in the European market. In historical perspective, this model was seen as a bridge between the postwar Mercedes models and the brand's later, more modern model series.
Characteristics and features
This Mercedes-Benz 220S is equipped with a six-cylinder carbureted engine and semi-automatic transmission. The combination of a six-cylinder inline engine with a semi-automatic transmission was in keeping with the technical approach of Mercedes-Benz at this time, in which comfort and smooth driving were central. Within the offerings of the time, the Mercedes-Benz 220S offered a higher degree of refinement than many contemporaries in the same segment.
Some years ago, work was performed on this Mercedes-Benz 220S in which the power brakes were renewed, a new clutch plate was installed and the fuel pump was replaced. The carburetors were also flushed, all four wheel cylinders were renewed and several cables replaced. These operations are part of the technical history of the lot and provide insight into the maintenance performed in the past.
The Mercedes-Benz 220S is known in model history as a car in which mechanical simplicity and high-end build quality came together. The semi-automatic transmission is a feature that contributes to the distinctive character of this type, as is the six-cylinder body that played a definite role in this class in those years.

Various technical work has been carried out in the past, including replacement of the power brakes, clutch plate, fuel pump, wheel cylinders and various cables.
