History and background
The Triumph TR6 appeared in 1968 as the successor to the TR5 and was developed within the line of sports cars that Triumph had been building under the TR designation since the 1950s. The model retained the basic concept of a two-seat rear-wheel-drive roadster and came with a rectilinear body designed by Karmann. This gave the Triumph TR6 its own distinct external signature within the TR range, while the technical design followed the traditional construction of earlier models.
The Triumph TR6 was initially intended for an international market with an emphasis on export, particularly to North America. For that market, the versions were adapted to comply with applicable emissions and safety regulations, so the specification could vary by region. Within the Triumph line, the TR6 occupied an important place as the model remained in production for many years and was sold in large numbers. This places the Triumph TR6 among the best known British sports cars of the period.
The 1976 model year falls in the later production years of the Triumph TR6, a phase when the model was already firmly established as a classic-looking sports car with a relatively conservative technical base. At its time, the TR6 was considered a rational choice within the segment of compact British roadsters, with a construction that built on the TR tradition while adhering to the tastes of the late 1960s and early 1970s.
Characteristics and special features
The Triumph TR6 is distinguished primarily by the combination of an angular body with the chassis concept that was further developed within the TR series. The car features a separate chassis, which was characteristic of many British sports cars of the period. The long hood, short rear end and two-seat layout are also in keeping with the classic roadster recipe on which the Triumph TR6 is based.
A special aspect of the Triumph TR6 is the different technical interpretation between markets. The European versions and the versions for the American market could differ significantly from each other, including modifications to emissions and equipment specifications. As such, the Triumph TR6 represents a model that demonstrates well both technically and historically how British manufacturers in the 1970s tailored their sports cars to diverse markets.
This TR6 is in a clean and drivable condition. The car has recently undergone an almost complete restoration. Several bills of this are present.
Summary
The Triumph TR6 is a British two-seater sports car from a longstanding and important model series, with a Karmann-designed body and a distinct place within Triumph history. The 1976 model year falls into the later production phase of this type. To get a good idea of the lot we recommend you come to the viewing day.
