History and Background
The 2013 BMW X5 3.5i was introduced during a period when BMW was further expanding its position in the larger SUV segment. The original BMW X5 was introduced in 1999 as the brand’s first SUV model. BMW used the designation “Sports Activity Vehicle” (SAV) for this model, emphasizing the combination of an off-road vehicle’s capabilities with the handling of a passenger car. The first generation, internally designated as the E53, was developed during a period when BMW also owned Land Rover. This allowed the company to draw on existing expertise in all-wheel drive and off-road vehicles during development.
In 2006, the second-generation BMW X5, with the internal model code E70, was introduced. This generation featured larger body dimensions, a longer wheelbase, and a further-developed technical design. The X5 was produced at the BMW plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, where other SUV models from the brand were also built. The second generation remained in production until 2013 and was offered with various gasoline and diesel engines during this period. In 2010, the model underwent a facelift, which included updates to the engine lineup and various technical systems.
The BMW X5 3.5i was part of this generation’s gasoline lineup. The designation “35i” referred to the engine variant’s position within the lineup and not to its actual displacement. This version was powered by a 3.0-liter inline-six engine with turbocharging. During this period, the BMW X5 competed against models such as the Mercedes-Benz M-Class, Audi Q7, Porsche Cayenne, and Volkswagen Touareg. In 2013, the second generation was succeeded by the third generation, internally designated as the F15.
Features and Specifications
An important technical feature of the BMW X5 3.5i is the use of the N55 six-cylinder engine. This engine features direct gasoline injection, a twin-scroll turbocharger, and BMW’s Valvetronic system, which variably controls the lift of the intake valves. In addition, the engine uses dual variable camshaft timing, referred to by BMW as Double-VANOS. The combination of these technologies was designed to ensure efficient combustion and smooth power delivery across a wide range of engine speeds. The engine was also used in several other BMW models from the same period.
The BMW X5 3.5i features the xDrive all-wheel-drive system, which electronically distributes drive power between the front and rear axles. The second-generation X5 also stood out for its independent suspension all around and a body structure specifically tuned for on-road driving. This 2013 BMW X5 3.5i is in running condition. Both the interior and exterior look good, aside from a few minor imperfections. The car has recently undergone maintenance, has been made RDW-compliant, and has been fitted with a new AGM battery. Currently, the front seat cannot be adjusted forward or backward.
Summary
This 2013 BMW X5 3.5i combines the technical features of the second-generation X5 with a six-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine and the xDrive all-wheel-drive system. The car is in running condition and has recently undergone maintenance, during which a new AGM battery was also installed. The front seat’s power adjustment is currently an issue.
