History and Background
The Porsche 911 SC Targa was introduced in the late 1970s as part of the ongoing development of the G-series, the generation that steered the 911 in a more mature and refined direction without straying from the original concept. The abbreviation SC stands for Super Carrera and marks a period in which Porsche further consolidated the 911 with an air-cooled six-cylinder engine as a mainstay in the sports car segment. The 1982 Porsche 911 SC Targa belongs to the final production years of this model, a phase in which the Targa variant had long been a recognizable alternative to the coupé and the convertible did not yet exist in its current form.
Porsche introduced the Targa model as a solution to meet American market expectations regarding open-air driving and safety features. As a result, the model secured a permanent place within the 911 lineup. The combination of the fixed roll bar and the removable roof section gave the Porsche 911 SC Targa a unique place within the model line. In practice, the Targa remained significant for Porsche for a long time, partly because this body style visibly distinguished the 911 from many other sports cars of the same period. The Porsche 911 SC was produced in large numbers and is considered one of the more accessible and recognizable variants within the classic 911 family.
This 1982 car dates from the final phase of the SC generation, just before the transition to the subsequent 911 models. As such, the Porsche 911 SC Targa marks the end of an important development line in which the 911’s basic architecture was retained, while detailed changes further refined its practicality and finish. It was precisely during this period that the SC was appreciated as a model that combined classic 911 characteristics with the evolutionary trends of the 1980s.
