History and Background
The Citroën DS was introduced in 1955 as a successor in the upper-middle class segment, which Citroën sought to serve with a technically innovative approach. With the DS, the brand introduced a combination of aerodynamic design, hydraulic systems, and a chassis concept that differed significantly from typical French and European passenger cars of that period. The car quickly assumed a special position within Citroën’s lineup and evolved into a model that became influential both technically and stylistically.
The Citroën DS continued to evolve throughout its production years. Various versions and designations followed one another, as Citroën adapted the car to changing requirements and regulations. In 1973, the DS was in the final years of production, shortly before the transition to the Citroën CX. The D Super was part of the later, more simply designed variants within the DS series. In the market, this model was known for combining the technical foundation of the DS with a more accessible design.
Innovation played a central role in the Citroën DS. The hydraulic suspension, the independently operated braking and control system, and the unique body construction set the car apart from many of its contemporaries. As a result, the Citroën DS evolved into a model with a distinct place of its own in automotive history, with the D Super representing a later derivative within that line.
Features and Details
This 1973 Citroën DS D Super is equipped with power steering and the characteristic swiveling headlights. These elements are among the best-known technical features associated with the DS series and underscore the model’s distinctive character. The car is also equipped with an LPG system with a 60-liter tank capacity. This means this Citroën DS D Super has a system that was frequently used as an alternative fuel source in older vehicles during their active service period.
Around 2010, this Citroën DS D Super was professionally restored by Citro-Classique in Borculo. An extensive photo report of this restoration is available. Additional documentation is also included with the car. The interior is finished in mouse-gray fabric upholstery. The inside of the door handle is currently not functioning. The car is in running condition.
The combination of a late-production D Super model, the accompanying documentation, and the restoration work gives this Citroën DS D Super a clear place within the broader history of the DS. At this stage of the model series, the original design features of the DS were still being used, while the model had by then become one of the more refined variants.
Summary
This 1973 Citroën DS D Super is a late model in the DS series, equipped with power steering, swiveling headlights, an LPG system, and additional documentation. The professional restoration carried out around 2010 and the accompanying photo report are part of the car’s history. To get a good idea of the lot, we recommend that you attend the viewing day.
