Description

History and Background

The Daimler V8 debuted in the second half of the 1990s as the top-of-the-line model in Jaguar Cars’ Daimler range. At that time, Daimler had already been the luxury brand within the British automotive industry for decades, with a tradition dating back to the early 20th century. Whereas in earlier periods the name Daimler was primarily associated with classic British limousine manufacturing and stately six-cylinder engines, the brand name took on a different meaning in the 1990s, more in line with Jaguar technology and contemporary luxury features. The Daimler V8 fit into that development and stood above the regular Jaguar XJ models with which it shared the technical basis.

The 1998 Daimler V8 belongs to the later XJ generation with the internal project designation X308. This generation was introduced in 1997 and is characterized by the use of the AJ-V8 engine, which represented a significant technical step forward for Jaguar. For Daimler, this meant that the brand, despite its historic reputation, was continued in a form closely aligned with modern Jaguar production. The Daimler V8 was intended as a more exclusive model within the range, with an emphasis on comfort and finish rather than a sporty positioning.

In the market context, the Daimler V8 was a relatively rare sight. Daimler production volumes during this period were significantly lower than those of Jaguar, as the brand name was used only in limited numbers and primarily in the top-of-the-line models. As a result, the Daimler V8 now holds a distinctive place among late-era British luxury sedans, as a model that bridges the traditional Daimler identity with the engineering and proportions of the XJ series.

Features and details

The 1998 Daimler V8 shares its platform with the Jaguar XJ of the same generation, but distinguishes itself through its specific Daimler trim and positioning within the lineup. The X308 generation was the last full XJ series with round headlight design in a classic sedan line before Jaguar moved in a different stylistic direction in the following years. As a result, the Daimler V8 also represents an endpoint within a recognizable British design tradition.

Technically, the Daimler V8 is linked to the AJ-V8 engine family, which introduced a modern V8 configuration for Jaguar in place of the previously used six-cylinder engines and heavier V12 applications of the past. In the Daimler version, the focus was not on technical differentiation, but primarily on the combination of this engine architecture with the luxurious Daimler positioning. Within the model range, the Daimler V8 was regarded as one of the more prestigious variants, with an emphasis on understated presentation and a distinct brand identity.

This example has a few imperfections in both the interior and exterior. This fact is part of the objective description of the lot and is consistent with the inspection of a vehicle from this period, in which details of finish and signs of use may play a role in the assessment.

Summary

The 1998 Daimler V8 is a later and relatively rare representative of the traditional Daimler brand within the Jaguar XJ generation, featuring AJ-V8 technology and the characteristic Daimler positioning. This example has a few imperfections in both the interior and exterior. To get a good idea of the lot, we recommend that you attend the viewing day.
