Description

History and Background

The MG B was introduced in 1962 as the successor to the MGA and was developed as a compact sports car with a monocoque body. The model was an important step for MG, as it was more modern in design than its predecessor and at the same time met the demand for affordable sports cars. The MG B was available as a two-seater convertible and later also as the MG B GT coupe, with the fastback line designed by Pininfarina giving the model a different character than the roadster.

The MG B GT coupe was introduced in 1965 and offered more interior space and a practical tailgate design, without deviating from the technical foundation of the MG B. The car remained in production until the second half of the 1970s, making it one of the best-known British sports coupés of that period. The MG B was built in large numbers and became one of MG’s most recognizable models, partly due to its long production run and widespread distribution in export markets.

For the 1978 model year, the MG B GT coupe entered the final phase of production. By this time, the model had long been regarded as an established classic within the segment of compact British sports cars. The combination of existing technology, the coupé body style, and the recognizable design made the MG B GT coupé a fixture in MG history.

Features and details

This MG B GT coupé is equipped with an overdrive transmission. In this type of car, overdrive was often used in practice to reduce engine RPM at higher speeds, which improves driving characteristics on longer journeys. The combination of the standard four-cylinder powertrain with overdrive fits the way the MG B GT coupé was built in its day: light, mechanically straightforward, and focused on road use.

The car has a popular Webasto sunroof. That type of sunroof was common on British cars from this period and is valued on the MG B GT coupé as a feature that adds extra light and ventilation without significantly altering the body line. The exterior shows some imperfections, and the interior also bears the usual signs of wear and tear associated with the car’s age. As such, this MG B GT coupé aligns with the signs of use and age commonly found in examples from this model year.

The MG B GT coupé further distinguishes itself through the combination of compact sports car technology with a closed body and the practical rear end of the GT version. It was precisely this mix that made the model more versatile in its day than the open MG B, while the car retained its character as a classic British sports coupé.

Summary

This 1978 MG B GT coupé represents the later production years of one of MG’s most famous models. The car is equipped with an overdrive transmission and a Webasto sunroof, with exterior imperfections and typical signs of wear in the interior consistent with its age.
