Description

History and background

The BMW M5 is among BMW M GmbH's longest-running performance sedans and has been a fixture in the fast four-door car’s segment since its introduction in the 1980s. The first M5 appeared in 1985 based on the 5 Series and combined a relatively discreet body with technology from the sports car division. This introduced a formula that has remained characteristic of the BMW M5 ever since: high performance in a practical sedan format.

The generation available in 2018 belongs to the sixth generation M5 and is known internally as the F90. This version marked an important step in the development of the model, including the use of all-wheel drive, which later became available in modified form for a more rear-wheel-oriented driving experience. The BMW M5 from this period built on the model's traditional role as a fast business sedan, but with a technical interpretation that focused more emphatically on traction, drive control and repeatable performance.

Within the market position of the BMW M5, the car has always occupied a special place. The model not only competed with other sporty sedans from Germany, but often set the benchmark itself for its combination of performance, practicality and everyday usability. The 2018 BMW M5 follows in that line and represents a phase in which the model had been further developed both technologically and in terms of performance.

Characteristics and special features

This BMW M5 is equipped with an engine with a displacement of 4395 cc and an output of 600 hp. This provides the car with the specifications appropriate to the later, high-performance variants of the M5 series. The said combination of displacement and power is consistent with the familiar V8 biturbocharged layout that BMW used to position the model in this generation.

The BMW M5 has a top speed of 250 km per hour and accelerates from standstill to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds. Those performance values place the car in a class where a sedan is judged not only on comfort and utility, but also on direct dynamic qualities. In the context of the BMW M5, that is an important distinguishing feature, as the model traditionally combines a full-size family or business car with performance normally associated with coupés or sports cars.

The BMW M5 is also recognizable by its position within BMW's M division, in which engine, chassis and powertrain are aligned for a specific level of performance. It is precisely this integral approach that has given the model a firm place within the range of sporty luxury sedans over the years. The 2018 version fits into that development line and reflects the technical maturity of the model series.

Summary

The 2018 BMW M5 combines a 4395 cc engine with 600 hp, a top speed of 250 km/h and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds. Thus, this generation represents the further development of a model series that has been a benchmark within the fast sedan segment for decades.
