History and background
The BMW 520i A Touring E39 is part of the fifth generation of the 5 Series, internally referred to as E39, which BMW produced from 1995 to 2004. Within this model series, the Touring variant took its place alongside the sedan in 1996. The 1997 BMW 520i A Touring E39 is thus among the early examples of this generation. At that time, BMW positioned the 5 Series as a mid-size business car with an emphasis on ride comfort, technical refinement and a wide range of body styles and engine variations.
The E39 is considered an important step in the development of the 5 Series, due in part to the further refined suspension, the greater use of aluminum in the chassis components and the tighter finish compared to its predecessor. In the process, the Touring offered a practical body style without relinquishing the sedan's character. The BMW 520i A Touring E39 generally represented the entry point to the six-cylinder gasoline models in its lineup, striking a balance between practicality and traditional BMW character.
The Touring version of the E39 was less mainstream than the sedan and therefore appeals to a specific group within the classic and young-classic BMW market. The combination of a six-in-line, rear-wheel drive and station wagon body made the BMW 520i A Touring E39 a version that held a distinct place of its own within the model series. In addition, the E39 is often seen as one of the last generations of BMWs in which mechanical simplicity and modern technology were still present in a relatively balanced ratio.
Characteristics and features
The 1997 BMW 520i A Touring E39 is equipped with automatic transmission, which contributed to its comfort-oriented character in this model series. The Touring is distinguished by its practical rear end and enlarged usability compared to the sedan, while within the design line of the E39, the car remains recognizable by the understated proportions and clearly legible styling that were characteristic of BMW in the second half of the 1990s.
This example includes booklets with various service stamps as well as a number of invoices. This documentation is a part of the vehicle history and is consistent with the type of car where maintenance and recording of it within the market are important. The BMW has one key. The car is drivable.
The BMW 520i A Touring E39 is from a year when the E39 was still in a relatively early stage of production. This makes specimens from 1997 interesting within the model series, partly because later versions underwent various technical and cosmetic changes over the years. In this generation, the Touring combines the practical features of a station wagon with the understated presentation of a business BMW of the period.
Summary
The 1997 BMW 520i A Touring E39 represents the early Touring version of the E39 generation, with the usual combination of six-cylinder layout, station wagon body and automatic transmission. The presence of booklets with service stamps, a number of invoices and one key completes the vehicle's basic documentation. To get a good idea of the lot, we recommend coming to the viewing day.
