Description

History and background

By the 1990s, the Volkswagen Golf had long celebrated the position it had established from its introduction in 1974: a compact mid-size car with broad market acceptance and a major influence on the European car segment. Developed as a successor to the Beetle, the Golf marked a clear technical and stylistic change in direction for Volkswagen, with front-mounted engines and front-wheel drive at the heart of the concept. This made the Golf a basis for a large number of variants, from simple versions to sporty and more luxuriously equipped versions.

The 1997 Volkswagen Golf belongs to the third generation, which was delivered from early 1992. This generation was known for a more rounded body shape than its predecessor and for the further expansion of the model range. In Europe at that time, the Golf was a firm benchmark in the C-segment, with competition from the Ford Escort, Opel Astra and Peugeot 306, among others. In doing so, the Golf distinguished itself through a combination of recognizability, broad usability and a solid technical basis, which contributed in part to the large numbers in which the model was sold.

The Volkswagen Golf was delivered in the Netherlands in a wide representation, both through private and business registrations. The model series was continuously developed by Volkswagen, with generation-specific improvements often taking place in small steps. This is precisely why a 1997 Golf is a representative example of the development phase of the compact mid-size car in the second half of the 1990s.

Characteristics and features

The 1997 Volkswagen Golf was newly delivered in the Netherlands. That fact fits within the broad presence of the model on the Dutch market during that period and makes this car a specimen with a Dutch first registration. According to the RDW, the mileage is considered logical. The car is drivable.

Within the third generation of the Volkswagen Golf, a variety of engine and equipment levels were available, with Volkswagen maintaining a strong modular offering. This made the Golf suitable for a variety of uses, from daily transportation to more complete versions. Characteristic of the Golf in this period was the emphasis on practicality, clear handling and a construction that matched the model's broad role within the Volkswagen program.

The Volkswagen Golf in this generation came in several body styles, including hatchback and station wagon, and in different trim levels. Thus, the model remained close to its original function as a general-purpose family car, while at the same time the name Golf retained a permanent place within the European street scene. The 1997 model year series falls in the final phase of the third generation, shortly before Volkswagen switched to the next generation.

Summary

This 1997 Volkswagen Golf belongs to the third generation of one of the most influential models in the compact segment. The example was delivered new in the Netherlands, the mileage is considered logical by the RDW and the car is drivable. To get a good impression of the lot we advise you to come to the viewing day.
