History and background
The Citroën AX was introduced in 1986 as a compact, lightweight hatchback in the B-segment. Citroën developed the model with an emphasis on low weight and efficiency, at a time when the manufacturer was looking to further modernize its passenger car lineup. In 1991, the Phase II of the AX appeared, which included changes to the exterior and interior, and in the same year the Citroën AX 4x4 was launched as an all-wheel drive variant.
The Citroën AX 4x4 stands out within the model range for its rarity and for the technical modifications required to incorporate the powertrain. At the time, the car was positioned as a more specific version within the compact segment, with the additional price being significant compared to a base AX. As a result, production remained limited and the Citroën AX 4x4 is among the less frequently encountered variants of the model.
This example was delivered in November 1991 to the owner of Autohaus Prause in Arnsberg, in the Sauerland region. Thereafter, the car changed hands twice within the Prause family. With the car is the history present, along with all the booklets.
Characteristics and features
Under normal conditions, the Citroën AX 4x4 is driven through the front wheels. When grip is insufficient, all-wheel drive can be engaged electronically with a switch on the center console. This control can also be used while driving. This gave the AX 4x4 a practical technology that matched the light and compact nature of the model.
For the AX 4x4, Citroën had to modify several parts of the basic design. In this version, the spare tire is placed upright in the trunk, so the trunk floor, the rear shelf and the back of the rear seat were changed. Other changes have also been made to the AX to incorporate the all-wheel drive system. The particular example is equipped with a 1400 cc engine with 75 hp and has a mileage of 130,000 km. The registered weight is 720, whereas it should be 820. In the past two years, a new radiator, a renewed intake manifold gasket, several renewed brake lines, new front brake discs and pads, new brake fluid, a renewed timing belt with water pump, a replaced wheel bearing and four new Vredestein Quatrac four-season tires have been installed.
Summary
The 1991 Citroën AX 4x4 is a rare model within the AX range, with electronic engageable four-wheel drive, a modified body kit and a documented history. The vehicle has covered 130,000 km, is equipped with a 1400 cc engine with 75 hp and has been technically serviced over the past two years with several updated components.
