History and background
The Mercedes-Benz 230 GE is part of the first generation of the Geländewagen, known internally as the W460/W461 family, which originated in the 1970s as an off-road vehicle for military and specialist use. The development of this model was helped by the cooperation between Mercedes-Benz and Steyr-Daimler-Puch, with production taking place in Graz. The Mercedes-Benz 230 GE later entered the civilian market as a version that combined the robust base of the series with a more everyday usability.
Within the series, the Mercedes-Benz 230 GE occupied a position as a gasoline version with a four-cylinder engine, at a time when the Geländewagen was evolving from utilitarian vehicle to a model with broader application. The first series were known for their angular bodywork, ladder chassis and three mechanical differentials with engageable drive, features that distinguished the model from many regular passenger cars of the same period. During the 1980s, the Geländewagen grew to become a recognizable part of the Mercedes-Benz range, while essentially retaining its basic design.
Before the 1988 model year, the Mercedes-Benz 230 GE fell within a phase where the original design was still clearly present. These versions are often associated with a combination of relatively simple engineering and a construction that was primarily aimed at use under a variety of conditions. This very combination helped to give the 230 GE a firm place within the history of Mercedes-Benz off-road models.
Characteristics and special features
The Mercedes-Benz 230 GE is a version within the Geländewagen series with a 2.3-liter gasoline engine, the designation referring to the four-cylinder gasoline configuration. Compared to later and more luxurious variants, this version remained close to the original technical design of the series. Emphasis was placed on functionality, with a construction based on a robust frame and a mechanical driveline geared for use off paved roads.
The Mercedes-Benz 230 GE was further characterized by its rectilinear body shape and practical construction. The series came in different body shapes, including closed variants and short- and long-wheelbase versions, allowing the model to serve multiple purposes. In the context of the 1988 model year, this version belongs to the generation that by now had become firmly established between classic off-road vehicles and more civilian Mercedes-Benz models.
Summary
The 1988 Mercedes-Benz 230 GE is a version of the early Geländewagen generation, developed from a collaboration between Mercedes-Benz and Steyr-Daimler-Puch and produced in Graz. The model is known in Mercedes-Benz history as a functional off-road vehicle with a clear emphasis on technology and purpose of use.
