Description

History and background

The Porsche Cayenne S appeared as part of the second generation of the Cayenne series, known internally as the E2, which was introduced in 2010. With the Cayenne, Porsche entered a new market segment for the brand in 2002, that of the luxury SUV. That model marked an important expansion of the range and proved commercially significant for Porsche's further development in the following years. In doing so, the Cayenne S occupied a position between the entry-level versions and the more powerful top models.

For model year 2011, the Porsche Cayenne S received a more modern design and further refined technology than its predecessor. The second generation was built lighter and received a more efficient suspension concept, in part to bring its handling more in line with the brand's other models. Within the premium-SUV’s market, the Cayenne S was one of the models that brought wide attention to the combination of utility space, all-wheel drive and sporty positioning. The naming is in keeping with Porsche's tradition of using a letter designation to differentiate between the various engine variants.

The Porsche Cayenne S was part of a model range that was offered in multiple versions and trim levels. This made the S version an important volume model within the lineup. In the period around 2011, the Cayenne was of great significance for Porsche, both in sales numbers and in broadening the brand's appeal to an audience that sought a combination of practical practicality and Porsche character.

Characteristics and special features

The 2011 Porsche Cayenne S belongs to the second generation and is recognizable by the changes made for that generation in bodywork and chassis design. With this generation, more emphasis was placed on weight saving and a more efficient arrangement of technology, which gave the car a different technical starting point compared to the first Cayenne generation. The Porsche Cayenne S combines the SUV layout with a Porsche-tuned powertrain and suspension tuning, as was typical for the second generation.

Within the model history of the Porsche Cayenne S, this version occupies a distinct place as a middle variant. The S version traditionally represented a balance between daily use and the more performance-oriented variants within the range. For the 2011 model year, the car is thus representative of a phase in which Porsche had further developed the Cayenne into a mature model within the segment of luxury SUV’s.

Summary

The 2011 Porsche Cayenne S belongs to the second generation of the model and reflects the further development of the Cayenne line since the introduction of the type in 2002. The S version occupies a central position within the range and is technically and historically significant within Porsche's development as a manufacturer of luxury SUV’s.
