Description

History and background

The Mercedes-Benz 450 SL was part of the R107 series, introduced in 1971 as the successor to the long-running Pagoda generation. With ongoing technical and detail changes, the model remained in production until 1989. This makes the Mercedes-Benz 450 SL one of the longest-produced Mercedes-Benz passenger car models. The R107 was developed at a time when Mercedes-Benz placed great emphasis on safety, durability and timeless design, traits that gave the model a firm place within the international range of luxury open cars.

The Mercedes-Benz 450 SL was initially aimed primarily at the North American market, where the SL-badged roadster and coupe-cabriolet form soon became a recognizable fixture. The type designation 450 refers to the eight-cylinder engine family of the period, in which Mercedes-Benz supplied several versions of the V8. The car combined a relatively compact body with a long hood, a short rear and a design that leaned heavily on the brand's functional style in the 1970s and early 1980s.

Within the R107 series, the Mercedes-Benz 450 SL occupied an important place as a V8 variant with more pronounced engine positioning than the six-cylinder versions. In 1980, the model was halfway through the series' production period, meaning it could carry both the model's original lines and later modifications. The R107 was known for its wide market acceptance and was delivered in considerably higher numbers than many earlier SL generations, in part due to its long production run and international spread.

Characteristics and features

The Mercedes-Benz 450 SL is a two-seat open car with a removable hardtop and a fully folding hood design. This design was typical of SL models of the period and made the car suitable for use in different seasons. The body of the R107 was designed with a relatively high belt line and sturdy doors, an approach consistent with Mercedes-Benz's safety philosophy of the 1970s. The Mercedes-Benz 450 SL also received ample use of chrome and steel accents that visually placed the model within the Mercedes-Benz family of the time.

Technically, the Mercedes-Benz 450 SL was on a chassis with independent suspension all round and disc brakes, a setup common in the higher end segments of the time, but generally implemented at Mercedes-Benz with great attention to tuning and comfort. The V8 powertrain made the 450 SL one of the more heavily motorized versions within the R107 range, and that is precisely what distinguished this version from the six-cylinder SL models. The 1980 version falls within the period in which the R107 developed into an established fixture in the Mercedes-Benz lineup.

The Mercedes-Benz 450 SL was delivered at a time when emissions and safety regulations were being increasingly tightened in various markets. This affected the specifications for each market and the technical finish of the series as a whole. Within the model history, the 450 SL is therefore considered a representative reflection of the European and international luxury convertibles of the early 1980s.

Summary

The 1980 Mercedes-Benz 450 SL is a specimen from the long-running R107 generation, with a V8 positioning within the SL range and a model history strongly linked to the international market of luxury open cars. To get a good idea of the lot, we recommend coming to the viewing day.
