History and background
The MG TF 1500 belongs to the last generation of the classic MG T series, a series of compact British two-seater roadsters that helped define the brand's image from the 1930s. The TF appeared in 1953 as the successor to the MG TD and received a modified front end with lower hood, separate headlights and a styling closer to the sports car style common at the time. The MG TF 1500 entered the market in 1954 and was the most powerful version within this series.
With the introduction of the 1500cc engine, the MG TF 1500 was clearly positioned as a more mature variant of the TF. Production of the TF series was limited and only ran for a few years, as MG was already focusing on more modern models in the second half of the 1950s. As a result, the MG TF 1500 occupies a special place within brand history as the capstone of the classic, pre-war tradition of the small British roadster.
Historically, the MG TF 1500 also represents a transitional phase. The model retained the familiar ladder-chassis superstructure and traditional technology of the T Series, but its modified bodywork gave it a more modern appearance. Thus, the MG TF 1500 is in keeping with the period when MG was still strongly focused on simple, light open sports cars for an international audience.
Characteristics and features
This 1955 MG TF 1500 is equipped with the 1500 cc engine characteristic of this type. The car is in original condition and features several parts that have been renewed beforehand. These include the cooling system with new hoses and water pump and the brake system with brake cylinder and brake segments.
The MG TF 1500 is drivable and technically sound. The car starts well and runs nicely. The gearbox makes some noise in first gear. Such mechanical characteristics are in keeping with the character of this type of roadster, traditionally prized for its direct driving experience and simple engineering. Within the MG series, the TF 1500 stands out for its combination of classic T-series design and the last, most highly developed engine variant of this line.
For collectors and fans of British sports cars, the MG TF 1500 is especially relevant as one of the last examples of the old MG roadster family. The model combines the recognizable fifties shape with a limited production period and a technical set-up closely related to the earlier T-models.
Summary
The MG TF 1500 of the 1955 model year is an original British roadster with 1500 cc engine and updated parts to cooling system and brake system. The car is drivable, technically sound, starts well and runs nicely, with noise in first gear from the gearbox. To get a good picture of the lot we advise you to come to the viewing day.
