History and background
The Porsche 924 was introduced in the late 1970s as Porsche's entry-level model and marked a clear break from the brand's earlier, more conventional set-up. The model emerged from a joint development project with Volkswagen/Audi in which the 924 was also initially intended to serve as a sporty coupe for a wider audience. The car used a front-mounted four-cylinder engine, a transaxle layout with rear gearbox and independent suspension all around. This gave the Porsche 924 a technical configuration that was especially favorable at the time for weight distribution.
The 1981 Porsche 924 2.0 Coupe belongs to the later phase of the first generation. By this time, the model had established itself as a recognizable sports coupe within Porsche's range, alongside the more expensive 911 and the later 944. The 924 was delivered in several markets and remained popular due to its combination of compact dimensions, relatively low entry level and distinctive transaxle body. The 2.0-liter engine version thereby formed the basis of the model range and made the 924 accessible within the Porsche range.
This example was delivered new in Germany in 1980 and came to the Netherlands in 1985. This gives this Porsche 924 2.0 Coupe an early international registration history befitting the model's spread in Europe. The car is from the year 1981 and is thus consistent with the period in which the 924 still clearly retained its original positioning as a compact Porsche coupe.
Characteristics and features
The Porsche 924 is technically distinguished by the placement of the transmission at the rear, which means that the engine and gearbox are positioned at a distance from each other. This construction was less common in production cars of its class and is a key feature of the model. Also among the regular model features of the Porsche 924 2.0 Coupe are its long hood, coupe-shaped rear seat and large tailgate.
This example was started up this summer after a period of storage. In the process, the timing belt and water pump were replaced. The fuel system has also been addressed; the fuel pump, filter and accumulator have been replaced, as well as the injectors and the spider head. The car has been MOT-tested until 17-09-2027. These details provide a current technical and administrative frame of reference for the Porsche 924 2.0 Coupe within this auction lot.
Summary
The 1981 Porsche 924 2.0 Coupe represents Porsche's early transaxle generation and has a registered history from Germany to the Netherlands. The car has had several recent works on distribution and fuel system and has a valid MOT until 17-09-2027. To get a good impression of the lot we advise you to come to the viewing day.
