Description

History and background

The Mini 1000 HLE Mayfair is among the later versions of the classic Mini, which from 1959 grew into one of the most influential British car models of the twentieth century. Alec Issigonis' concept, with transverse engine, front-wheel drive and compact dimensions, set the standard for small cars for decades. During the 1970s and 1980s, the Mini was increasingly refined and came under different type designations, with the Mayfair positioned as a more comfort- and trim-oriented version.

The 1983 Mini 1000 HLE Mayfair falls within that period in which British Leyland continued to develop the Mini in several variants to keep the model current. The 1000cc versions were an important part of the range in this regard, as they formed the basis of the more accessible versions. At the same time, despite its age of almost a quarter century by then, the Mini remained a recognizable and competitive model in the compact car segment due to its construction and road handling. Production of the classic Mini eventually continued until 2000, making the model among the longest-produced British cars.

This Mini 1000 HLE Mayfair was originally Dutch delivered and was purchased new by a garage owner for his wife. After eleven years, the car came into the hands of a second owner. With this, the Mini has a history of use that fits the practicality for which the model was originally intended, as well as the personal use that characterizes many classic Minis.

Characteristics and features

The Mini 1000 HLE Mayfair is equipped with a fully stage 3 tuned 1300 engine taken from an MG Metro. This engine was built in collaboration with Blom, at the time specializing in Minis. This included a stage 3 crankshaft, camshafts, tappets and a light flywheel, while also modifying the intake and exhaust system. This gave the Mini a technical interpretation that differs from the standard 1000 version.

Since 2000, the Mini has been sitting idle in a dry garage. In 2023, the car underwent another technical overhaul in order to safely participate in traffic again. This included renewing the entire brake system, as well as the clutch cylinder, ignition coil, spark plugs, oil and filter, carburetor, gasoline filter, battery, kingpins and tires. This work is part of the Mini 1000 HLE Mayfair's recent history and is relevant to the presentation of this example.

Summary

The 1983 Mini 1000 HLE Mayfair is an original Dutch-delivered classic Mini with a special history of use and a modified 1300 engine from MG Metro components. The car combines familiar Mini technology with later engine and brake work. To get a good idea of the lot we advise you to come to the viewing day.
