Description

History and background

The Saab 96 is among the best-known compact models in Saab history. The model was introduced in the early 1960s as the successor to the 93 and became a fixture within the brand, partly due to its quirky construction, front-wheel drive and early use of a V4 engine in later builds. The Saab 96 remained in production for a long time, evolving over the years from a simple compact car to a model with a clear place within the European car market.

Within that long production time, several versions appeared, including special series that responded to specific markets or anniversaries. The Saab 96 GL Special Limited Edition belongs in that category. This version was produced in 1979 in honor of the 25th anniversary of Saab's importation into the Netherlands. Only 150 of this series were made, making it a rare variant within the Saab 96 series. This example is number 63 and was originally delivered new in the Netherlands.

The final years of production of the Saab 96 mark a transitional period for Saab, in which the brand stuck to existing technology and design while the market had changed further in the meantime. This is precisely why late versions and special editions were given their own place within the brand's history. The 1980 Saab 96 L V4 Limited Edition is in keeping with that final phase of the model, in which existing technology and limited editions came together.

Characteristics and special features

The Saab 96 GL Special Limited Edition can be recognized by its specific light blue metallic paint, special interior, spoiler and unique details that distinguish this version from regular Saab 96 models. This is relevant in the context of the Saab 96, as special editions within an already distinctive model add extra collector value and recognition. The version is closely linked to the Dutch market and to Saab's import history in the Netherlands.

For the Saab 96, the use of the V4 engine is an important technical feature of the later models. That engine configuration was part of the evolution of the model and is strongly associated with the way the Saab 96 was delivered in the 1970s. The Saab 96 L V4 Limited Editition offered here is drivable, which is in keeping with the fact that this is a ready-to-use classic within a limited and documented series. The combination of a late construction period, Dutch delivery and the limited production numbers makes this version special within the overall offer of the Saab 96.

Summary

The Saab 96 L V4 Limited Editition is a rare Dutch anniversary version from an edition of 150 copies, recognizable by specific finishing and special details. It is number 63, originally delivered new in the Netherlands and driving. To get a good impression of the lot we advise you to come to the viewing day.
