History and background
The Fiat 600 D appeared in the early 1960s as a further development of the Fiat 600, which was introduced in 1955 and played an important role in the postwar motorization of southern Europe. With its compact self-supporting body, rear-mounted four-cylinder engine and simple engineering, the Fiat 600 D fit into Fiat's policy of providing affordable and usable small cars for a wide audience. The model was carried in several markets under different names and grew to become one of the better-known Italian small cars of its time.
The Fiat 600 D was distinguished from the earliest version by technical refinements and a slightly larger displacement. In doing so, the model responded to the need for greater usability without abandoning the compact size and low running costs that characterized the 600 series. The Fiat 600 D was not only built in Italy, but also produced under license in other locations, including Spain, Germany and elsewhere, making the model circulate in several variants and versions. The body with rear doors, often referred to as opening against the direction of travel, remained a recognizable feature until later production periods.
In the Netherlands, the Fiat 600 D gained a permanent place within the range of small family and city cars of the 1960s. The year 1965 falls in a period when compact cars became increasingly common and when the Fiat 600 D was a practical choice within the European street scene of the time. The combination of simple construction, low mass and uncluttered technology makes the model especially interesting today as a representative of that early phase of mass mobility.
Characteristics and features
This Fiat 600 D was originally delivered new in the Netherlands. This makes the example historically trackable within the Dutch registration history. The car is in running condition and there are booklets with the car. The Fiat 600 D is therefore a copy in which traces of use, documentation and origin together form an important part of the context.
Also in terms of execution, the Fiat 600 D is a characteristic model within the compact Italian middle class of those years. The placement of the engine at the rear gives the car its own technical design, which was widely used in its time on small cars with limited exterior dimensions. By 1965, the Fiat 600 D was now a familiar sight on the European market, with a design that was functional rather than outspoken and that remained primarily focused on space within a very compact body. The interior and exterior look optically clean.
Summary
The 1965 Fiat 600 D is a Dutch newly delivered example of an important Italian compact model of the 1960s. The car is in driveable condition, has booklets with the car and shows optically clean on both interior and exterior. To get a good impression of the lot we advise you to come to the viewing day.
