Description

History and background

The Ferrari 400i appeared in the early 1980s as part of Ferrari's four-passenger range with a front-mounted V12 and automatic transmission. The model built on the 365 GT4 2+2 and the Ferrari 400, and later formed the basis for the 412. Together, these types form the longest-running model series in Ferrari history, with a production period of 17 years. The Ferrari 400i occupies a distinct place in this as the variant with injection, with which Ferrari responded to the technological and market developments of the period.

Under the hood lies the Colombo-designed V12, an engine family that harkens back to Ferrari's classic twelve-cylinder architecture. In the Ferrari 400i, this engine is implemented as a 4.8-liter V12 with 340 horsepower. The technology is thus in direct line with the Daytona, one of Maranello's better-known twelve-cylinder models. This makes the 400i a model in which the grand touring concept was combined with the traditional Ferrari engine layout, within a body design that for its time was aimed at four-seat use.

A total of 884 examples of the Ferrari 400i were built. This puts the model among the less numerous Ferraris produced during the period when the brand also developed more exclusive series alongside its sports cars. Within Ferrari's market position, the 400i occupies a place of its own, between the outspoken sports models and the more comfortably equipped GT cars with which the brand broadened its range.

Characteristics and features

The Ferrari 400i is distinguished by its long, elegant body line and the combination of a V12 in the front with a configuration for four people. Technically and stylistically, the model is clearly of a different order from the mid-engine Ferraris of the same period. Moreover, the version with injection marks the transition to more modern engine characteristics, appropriate to the 1980s.

This example is finished in Beige Doré Metallizzato with a two-tone beige/brown leather interior. At the time, that combination was only available through the listing. The car also features full leather upholstery to the headliner, an original Blaupunkt radio/cassette, power windows, a BOSCH telephone and air conditioning. Several booklets are included. This specification is in keeping with the character of the Ferrari 400i as a luxurious Ferrari with an emphasis on comfort and personal equipment.

Summary

The 1981 Ferrari 400i is among the longest-running Ferrari series, is equipped with the 4.8-liter Colombo V12 with 340 horsepower and was produced in 884 units. This example has a rare factory combination in Beige Doré Metallizzato with a two-tone beige/brown interior and comes with several booklets.
