Description

History and background

The BMW 316i Baur TC belongs to the range of converted BMW 3-series models manufactured by Baur in Stuttgart. Since the 1960s, Baur developed into a regular name for body modifications based on BMW models, with the open body variants and the so-called top convertibles in particular becoming recognizable. The BMW 316i Baur TC follows in that tradition, combining the compact technology of the E30 generation with a bodywork solution executed by Baur.

The Baur TC versions were, in their time, an alternative to a full convertible, within a market segment in which BMW itself did not yet have an open E30 in the program. The construction with fixed safety bar and removable roof sections gave the model its own position between coupe and convertible. Within BMW's 3-series, the 316i thereby occupied the entry-level position, as an equipment variant aimed at the smaller gasoline engines of the E30 generation. The 1989 BMW 316i Baur TC thus falls into the later production years of the E30 family, a period when the third-generation 3-series was already firmly established on the market.

Baur did not produce these versions in large numbers compared to the regular BMW 3-series. As a result, the Baur variants are today a clearly recognizable subgroup within the E30 model range. In addition, the BMW 316i Baur TC is historically interesting because it shows how BMW and suppliers responded to the demand for open variants in those years, even before factory cabriolets became commonplace in this segment. For collectors and enthusiasts, the combination of E30 technology and Baur bodywork therefore represents a separate niche within BMW history.

Characteristics and special features

Characteristic of the BMW 316i Baur TC is the bodywork superstructure with fixed center section and removable roof panels, a solution different from that of a standard convertible. This type of construction was carried by Baur under the designation TC and gives the model its own technical and visual identity. The construction of the Baur versions is closely linked to the BMW 3-series E30, whose proportions and basic architecture remain clearly recognizable.

The BMW 316i in this version is linked to the range of four-cylinder entry-level models of the E30 generation. Within the model range, the 316i formed one of the more accessible variants, while the Baur modification gave the model a different character from the regular closed sedan or coupe. It is precisely this combination of type designation and body variant that makes the BMW 316i Baur TC a relatively specific version within the broader BMW production of the late 1980s.

Summary

The 1989 BMW 316i Baur TC is a BMW 3-series of the E30 generation with a Baur-equipped TC body, giving the model its own place within the history of open BMW variants. The version unites the technology of the 316i with a body solution developed by Baur from a period when such alternatives had a recognizable market position.
