History and background
With the introduction of the BMW E23 in 1977, BMW took an important step into the upper segment. The BMW 733i belonged to the first generation of what was henceforth officially referred to as the 7 Series. This gave BMW a separate flagship series for the first time, developed as a successor to the BMW E3 and aimed at competitors such as Mercedes-Benz and Jaguar. At the same time, the BMW 733i clearly retained the sporty character that distinguished the brand from many of its contemporaries.
The E23 was designed as a luxury sedan with a more driver-oriented approach than was usual in this segment. The design was understated and elegant, with the characteristic sharknose nose that was strongly associated with BMW during this period. Compared to other luxury sedans of the 1970s, the BMW 733i looked more dynamic without abandoning comfort and long-distance capability. This very combination made the E23 a model that held its own position within the range of premium sedans.
Within the series, the BMW 733i took a place above entry-level versions such as the 728 and 730. This put the 733i at the top of the range in its time. The model reflects the phase in which BMW emphatically developed as a manufacturer of luxury sport sedans, with a technical and stylistic signature that would later become defining for further 7 Series generations.
Characteristics and special features
The BMW 733i is equipped with BMW's M30 six-in-line engine, a power source that has a firm place in brand history. Known for its smoothness, this 3.2-liter injection engine is an important part of the BMW 733i's identity. In combination with the automatic transmission, the drive concept matches the refined character expected of this model.
This example is finished in Arktisblau with a beige buffalo leather interior. That buffalo leather was an exclusive option at the time and is considered rare today. The interior has recently been fully addressed and refreshed, with the leather carefully restored and damages repaired while maintaining its original character. The car was originally from Spain and later imported from Cordoba, so the bodywork is exceptionally well preserved and rust free. A few minor signs of use and light dents are present all around.
The BMW 733i is additionally equipped with a G3 LPI LPG system. Also present are small reading lights in the rear, incorporated into the C-pillars. Furthermore, the car is equipped with an original BMW tow bar. These are details that fit well with the equipment and character of an early 7 Series.
Summary
The 1978 BMW 733i represents the first generation of the BMW 7 Series and combines the historic position of the model with special equipment details and a rare executed interior. The combination of E23 character, M30 six-cylinder technology and specific original features makes this a standout within the early 7 Series. To get a good idea of the lot, we recommend coming to the viewing day.
