Description

History and background

The Mercedes-Benz 230S belongs to the W111 series, the so-called Heckflosse models that Mercedes-Benz positioned from the late 1950s onwards as comfortable and technically sophisticated middle-class and upper-middle-class segment cars. The 230S appeared as a further development within this line and came in the 1960s as a closed sedan and as a Cabriolet and Coupe in the more expensive versions of the family. With its elegant proportions, clear markings in the bodywork and distinctive tail fins, the Mercedes-Benz 230S was in keeping with the brand's postwar design and safety philosophy.

The 1965 Mercedes-Benz 230S fell at a time when Mercedes-Benz was strongly committed to quality, durability and quiet roadability. Known for its solid construction, the W111 found a permanent place in the upper segment, both in Europe and abroad. This example was delivered new in the Netherlands and returned to the Netherlands after a stay in France in 1996. Thus, this Mercedes-Benz 230S has a documented international history within the same period of use.

Within the model history of Mercedes-Benz, the six-cylinder Heckflossen occupy a special position, as they combined the comfort and finish of the larger Mercedes models with a relatively compact body. In this sense, the Mercedes-Benz 230S was an important transitional model: classic in form, but already completely attuned technically and in terms of finish to the higher market segment of the time.

Characteristics and special features

This Mercedes-Benz 230S is finished in a soft blue tone on both the exterior and the interior. That color scheme deviates from the more common Mercedes-Benz palette of this period and gives the car a recognizable, distinctive presentation. The combination fits well with the understated design of the W111 and emphasizes the understated lines of the body.

The car is equipped with power steering, power brakes and an automatic transmission. The gearbox was recently overhauled, with an investment of €6,000. This makes the technical body of this Mercedes-Benz 230S in line with the comfortable character for which this model was developed at the time. Since 1998 the car has been driven approximately 8,000 km and during that period it has had regular maintenance. There are several invoices present and the car comes with several booklets.

In addition, the car has a nice patina, with slight signs of use such as small dents, dents and some touched up spots. These details are visibly part of the usage history of the Mercedes-Benz 230S and are in keeping with the age and character of the vehicle.

Summary

The 1965 Mercedes-Benz 230S is a Dutch car with an international history, a distinctive blue-blue color scheme, automatic transmission and power-assisted controls. With recent gearbox overhaul, service history, invoices and booklets, this example represents a clearly documented classic within the W111 series.
