Description

History and background

The Volkswagen T2 belongs to the second generation of the Volkswagen Transporter and was produced from 1967 to 1979. Within this series, the T2 developed from a simple commercial vehicle to a basis for a variety of versions, including motorhomes, which were booming in the 1970s. The combination of rear-mounted air-cooled engine, simple technology and wide applicability made the Volkswagen T2 a common basis for conversions by specialized coachbuilders.

The 1976 Volkswagen T2 Auto Vila Jurgens is a motorhome based on a Volkswagen Transporter, built by Jurgens, a South African caravan manufacturer that at the time produced alongside the Volkswagen factory. Jurgens built motorhomes based on Volkswagen T2 pickup trucks in the 1970s, with a reputation for solid workmanship and well-kept furnishings. This example spent its first year of life in Africa and was then transported to the Netherlands. The camper was acquired 25 years ago at a mileage of 60,000 and now stands at 92,000 real miles. The original AP 1800 cc engine is still fitted. The 3-speed automatic transmission also belongs to this version.

Within the camper market, the Volkswagen T2 Auto Vila Jurgens occupies a specific place due to the combination of South African body, Volkswagen technology and, for that period, relatively complete camper equipment. Jurgens motorhomes from this period were known for their practical layout and solid construction. The presence of original booklets and porcelain crockery is in keeping with the period when this type of camper was supplied and used not only as a travel vehicle, but also as a fully equipped recreational vehicle.

Characteristics and features

This Volkswagen T2 Auto Vila Jurgens features green tinted heat-reflective glass, air-assisted suspension and a stand heater. Also included are a gas stove, refrigerator, shower stall and new cushions with memory foam and authentic fabric. The camper is equipped with a hidden VDO radio with four speakers and remote control from the seating area, in addition to an original radio. A baking oven has also been installed.

Technical updates include the new original heat exchangers, new exhaust, starter motor, alternator, brake oil, rear brakes, bus tires and the new MOT are relevant. The automatic transmission has been professionally cleaned and shifts excellent. The camper has no leaks. The combination of an original engine, air suspension and the specific Jurgens superstructure gives the Volkswagen T2 Auto Vila Jurgens a version that is clearly different from the standard Transporter and from many later camper conversions.

Summary

The 1976 Volkswagen T2 Auto Vila Jurgens is a South African camper superstructure based on the second generation Transporter, with original 1800 cc engine, automatic transmission, various updated components and a complete camper interior. The car combines period features with targeted additions and comes with original documentation and accessories. To get a good idea of the lot, we recommend coming to the viewing day.
