History and background
The Saab 96 was introduced in 1960 as the successor to the Saab 93 and became one of the Swedish brand's best-known models. The model broadly adopted the compact, aerodynamic body shape of its predecessor, but received a larger nose section and further developed technology. The Saab 96 remained in production for a remarkably long time and did not disappear from the range until 1980, playing an important role in the model's transition from the early two-stroke Saabs to the later V4 versions.
In the 1960s and early 1970s, the Saab 96 firmly established itself as a practical mid-size car with its own character. Its front-wheel drive, relatively short wheelbase and specific chassis contributed to a handling that distinguished it from many of its contemporaries. In addition, the Saab 96 became known in rally racing through successes by Erik Carlsson and others, which gave the model visibility beyond the mainstream market. The model was important to Saab as a volume model and as a carrier of the brand image in several European markets.
The 1973 example falls in the phase when the Saab 96 had been further developed for years and was delivered in Europe with the Ford V4 engine, among others. During this period, the car had undergone a number of technical modifications to meet changing requirements, while the basic shape of the model remained recognizable. A Saab 96 of this year of manufacture is thus among the late-produced versions of a model series with a long production run.
Characteristics and features
The Saab 96 is known for its streamlined, aviation-influenced design, with a high rear end and a compact front end. That design was not only typical, but also functional within the development spirit of Saab, which at this time relied heavily on proprietary technical solutions. The combination of front-wheel drive and a compact body made the Saab 96 stand out from many conventional mid-size cars of the same era.
This example was originally delivered new in the Netherlands and therefore has a Dutch first delivery. The car is in good driving condition. The exterior looks clean and has some imperfections. The interior looks good. The engine compartment makes a well-groomed impression. The car comes with booklets, which forms additional documentation within the lot.
For a 1973 Saab 96, the historical positioning is also important: this is a model that was modified several times during its production years, but retained its recognizable character. It is precisely this combination of long production, technical evolution and distinct brand identity that makes the Saab 96 a firm name within Dutch and European automotive history.
Summary
This 1973 Saab 96 combines a long model history with a Dutch first delivery and a well-kept presentation of interior and engine compartment. The car is in good driving condition and comes with booklets. To get a good impression of the lot we advise you to come to the viewing day.
