History and background
The Mercedes-Benz 500 SL belongs to the R107 generation, a model series that was built starting in 1971 and became one of Mercedes-Benz's longest-produced passenger car models. The R107 was known in the 1970s and 1980s as a combination of open ride comfort, solid construction and relatively luxurious finish, within the segment of large roadsters and coupe-like cars with removable hardtop. The 500 SL thereby constituted the most powerful version within the regular SL series and was an important premium model within the program in the first half of the 1980s.
The 1984 Mercedes-Benz 500 SL falls into the later phase of the R107, in which the technology had been further developed and the model had gained a firm foothold in Mercedes-Benz's international offerings. The 500 SL came to markets where demand for six-cylinder and eight-cylinder SL models remained, combining the classic SL concept with a more pronounced V8 character. In Europe, the 500 SL was a distinctive presence within the range, partly because its heavier engine and associated equipment clearly positioned it above the 280 and 380 variants.
The Mercedes-Benz 500 SL was not a mass-market model within the overall Mercedes lineup in its day, but it was an important sign of the brand. The R107 generation was built in large numbers overall and remained in production for an exceptionally long time, which partly explains why this type is still known to a wide audience. The combination of timeless design, solid technology and a clear position as a premium roadster makes the 500 SL a model with a firm place in the brand's history.
Characteristics and special features
The 1984 Mercedes-Benz 500 SL was delivered European. The car is in good driving condition and the interior and exterior look nice. In recent years, tens of thousands of euros have been invested in the car, both technically and cosmetically. This work is documented in an extensive file with many invoices.
Within the R107 series, the 500 SL occupies a special position due to the combination of V8 engineization and the classic open Mercedes concept. The version was designed at a time when Mercedes-Benz emphasized durability, comfort and a high level of finish. This translates into a construction that, in the case of the 500 SL, has remained recognizable for its robust build and well thought-out engineering, characteristics that distinguish the model from many contemporaries in the same segment.
For the Mercedes-Benz 500 SL, moreover, factory specification and execution could vary from market to market, which, in the case of European examples, often resulted in a distinctive composition within the SL program. The combination of model history, production series and the available documentation gives this car a clear place within the later R107 generation.

The 1984 Mercedes-Benz 500 SL is a European-delivered R107 with a firm place within the classic SL series. The car is in good drivable condition, has a cared for interior and exterior, and boasts an extensively documented record of technical and cosmetic investments.
