History and background
The BMW 2002 was part of the so-called Neue Klasse and is considered one of the models with which BMW further expanded its position in the compact sport sedan segment in the 1960s and 1970s. The 2002 was introduced as a two-door version within the 02 series, which appeared in 1966 as the successor to the 1600-2. With the 2.0-liter four-cylinder, BMW was able to offer a car that, for its time, offered a combination of practicality, compact dimensions and, for the segment, remarkably direct driving characteristics.
The BMW 2002 came in several variants and became an important model for the brand. Within the 02 series, the 2002 took a central place, partly because the car was not only sold in regular versions, but also served as a basis for sportier and technically further developed versions. Production of the 02 series ran from 1966 to 1977 and included a total of several hundred thousand units. Thus this model series became decisive for the further development of BMW as a manufacturer of compact, dynamic passenger cars.
This example concerns a 1975 BMW 2002 sedan, with chassis number 3752804. The car was first registered in 1975 and remained in the same family for a long time thereafter. The history with long-term suspension and limited use suits cars that were mostly preserved rather than intensively used. The odometer reading is 112,800 kilometers, which combined with the known history of use gives a clear picture of limited use over a long period.
Characteristics and details
The 1975 BMW 2002 belongs to the later versions of the 02 series, distinguished by its recognizable two-piece body with a functional, angular design. The car is known for its compact dimensions and emphasis on simple, technically uncluttered construction. During this period, the 2002 was an important model for BMW in the mid-range segment, emphasizing solidity and a clear technical design.
This example is still in completely original condition, with the exception of the Alpina wheels fitted. The car has the original Alpina wheels with new tires and can be delivered with the original steel rims with new tires if required. The first paint is present and shows spots, while ashtray and headliner show that it has never been smoked in. The battery has recently been replaced. Present with the car are the original booklet and manual. According to the available data, the BMW 2002 is road tax free and an MOT is no longer required; the corresponding statements are attached.
After a period of 15 years of suspension, the BMW 2002 returned to the road in 2020. In the process, the technical backlog was repaired and the car was again MOT-worthy. That makes this BMW 2002 a specimen with a clear and documented history of use and preservation, where the original presentation and known equipment details combine to create a cohesive picture.
Summary
This 1975 BMW 2002 combines a well-known place within the 02 series with a long established history, low mileage and present original documentation. The car remains largely original, with Alpina wheels as a departure from standard specification. To get a good idea of the lot we recommend coming to the viewing day.
