Description

History and background

The Rolls-Royce Corniche Convertible appeared in the late 1960s as an open variant of the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow and was later given its own model name. During this period, Rolls-Royce opted for a more modern self-supporting body, combined with conventional techniques aimed at comfort and refinement. The Corniche occupied a position within the range as the brand's most exclusive open model, aimed at an international clientele that desired an open body without renouncing the distinctive Rolls-Royce character.

The 1978 Corniche Convertible is among the early versions of the model as delivered in the 1970s. During this period, the Corniche was a relatively rare sight, due in part to its manual construction and limited production numbers. The car was built at a time when Rolls-Royce was continuing to build on its reputation as a supplier of luxury passenger cars, while the market demand for open top models among wealthy buyers remained.

Within the history of Rolls-Royce, the Corniche occupies a special place in that it remained in production for a long time and developed into a recognizable model in the premium segment. The Corniche name was later also used on coupe and convertible variants, with the Convertible remaining the version that most clearly referred to the classic open touring car, but in a more modern context.

Characteristics and details

The 1978 Rolls-Royce Corniche Convertible came to the Netherlands from California in 2009. The car is in running condition. This model comes with a classic combination of a V8 engine, automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive, in line with the technical design that Rolls-Royce applied in this period. The Corniche was known for its heavy construction, spacious dimensions and emphasis on quietness and comfort while driving.

This Rolls-Royce Corniche Convertible has been well maintained and this is evident in the interior and exterior, which are clean. In addition, booklets are present, some invoices have been added and the original American title is included. For a Corniche from this period, such documents are relevant in establishing the provenance and history of the car.

The Corniche is distinguished from many of its contemporaries by its combination of British coachwork, luxurious finish and open bodywork without compromising the stately character for which the marque is known. The model was produced by Rolls-Royce in limited numbers and as a result has remained a recognizable presence within the segment of classic convertibles.

Summary

The 1978 Rolls-Royce Corniche Convertible is an open version from the early years of the model, with an origin from California and Dutch registration since 2009. The car is drivable, well maintained and comes with booklets, invoices and the original American title. To get a good impression of the lot we advise you to come to the viewing day.
