Description

History and background

The Pontiac Grand Prix was introduced for the 1962 model year as a sportier-oriented two-door coupé within Pontiac's offerings. The model aligned with the development of the American personal luxury car, with an emphasis on a long hood, short rear end and a distinct, closed body shape. In the mid-1960s, the Pontiac Grand Prix gained a more distinct position of its own within General Motors, with Pontiac using the model to differentiate itself from the brand's more conventional full-size models.

The 1965 model year falls into the first generation of the Pontiac Grand Prix. At that time, the model came on a modified platform and received its own bodywork, with features that distinguished it from other Pontiac products. The Pontiac Grand Prix was not a large volume segment in these years, but a model with which Pontiac supported its image of performance and style. That very combination made the Grand Prix recognizable in its market segment, with a place between the traditional luxury coupés and the more performance-oriented American midsize cars.

The 1965 Pontiac Grand Prix fit within a phase in which American manufacturers were paying increasing attention to individualization of model ranges. Details such as chrome trim, closed wheel openings with skirts and a cared-for interior played an important role in this. The Grand Prix was also increasingly refined technically and visually in those years, without losing the character of a large, long-lined coupé.

Characteristics and Details

This Pontiac Grand Prix was built in Linden, New Jersey. According to the available appraisal report, a replacement value of €26,000 has been established. The same report states that the interior is in very good condition, with a neat and fresh overall appearance. The blue leather dashboard is nicely done with a wood insert, while the instruments are clearly readable. Also described as cared for are the blue faux leather upholstery on the seats and rear seat, the blue cloth floor covering with rubber inlay mat set, and the perforated vinyl headliner.

The body and sheet metal of this Pontiac Grand Prix are described in the report as optically tight and flawless, with correct fits and complete, intact rubbers. This is an older restoration. The separate wheel skirts are mounted and color matched. The chrome and trim strips are in undamaged condition and show mild patina locally. Additionally, tinted glass is present, and the windows are original stamped Safety Plate glass with no weather stripping or significant damage.

Summary

The 1965 Pontiac Grand Prix represents the first generation of a model that held its own place within Pontiac as a sport oriented personal luxury car. This example comes from Linden, New Jersey and is described in the appraisal report with several cared for and original features, complemented by an established replacement value of €26,000.
