Description

History and background

The Jaguar E-Type V12 marks a later phase in the development of the E-Type, which had firmly established itself within the sports car segment since its introduction in the early 1960s. Whereas the early E-Type was best known for its compact six-in-line and muscular body shapes, from 1971 the Jaguar E-Type V12 received a further developed powertrain to match changing market expectations and demands for agility and comfort. Within Jaguar's model history, this version formed the final piece of the E-Type series, which ended in 1975.

The Jaguar E-Type V12 came at a time when many British sports cars had to adapt their original technical concept to new regulations and a changing international market. The larger engine made the car less radical than the first series, but at the same time reinforced the character of a grand tourer. By 1973, production was at the stage where the series had already clearly crystallized, with the coupe and open versions that had given the model widespread acclaim.

For Jaguar, the E-Type V12 was also important as a sign of technical continuity. The V12 engine was a relatively rare solution in a production car at the time and gave the Jaguar E-Type V12 its own position within the international range. This kept the model relevant in a market in which there was an increasing emphasis on versatility in addition to performance.

Characteristics and special features

The Jaguar E-Type V12 is distinguished primarily by the twelve-cylinder engine, which offered a different type of power delivery and running culture compared to the earlier six-in-line. Moreover, for the latter series, the wheelbase and body design of the longer version was retained, contributing to the recognizable proportions of the late E-Type. In a technical sense, this version follows the evolution of the original series, but with a powertrain distinctly different from the early models.

The 1973 Jaguar E-Type V12 thus belongs to a combination of classic E-Type design and a later technical interpretation. That very combination makes the model a clearly defined phase within E-Type history. The car thus represents not only the final production years of the series, but also the transition from the original concept to a more refined interpretation of it.

Summary

The 1973 Jaguar E-Type V12 represents the later development of a model that became firmly established early on in the history of British sports car building. With its twelve-cylinder engine and position as the final piece of the E-Type series, this version represents a recognizable and historically interesting variant within the type.
