Description

History and background

The Ferrari Dino 308 GT4 was introduced in 1973 as a successor within the Dino line and represented a marked departure from the two-seater Dino models known up to that time. The 308 GT4 was Ferrari's first production car with a mid-engine and a 2+2 configuration, designed by Bertone instead of Pininfarina. This gave the Ferrari Dino 308 GT4 its own place within the marque's model history, both through its design and technical set-up.

The model was initially sold under the Dino name and not directly as a Ferrari, which was in keeping with the strategy at the time of positioning certain models separately. The V8 mid-engine was new for this class within Ferrari's program and made the Dino 308 GT4 technically akin to later sporty Ferrari models with eight-cylinder layouts. In 1975, the year of construction of this lot, the model was in the middle of its production phase. The Dino 308 GT4 was produced until 1980, making it a model from a relatively short but important development period within Ferrari's history. The combination of four seats and a mid-engine made the car less common in its time than many other sports cars in this segment.

A particular historical detail is that over time the Dino 308 GT4 was also officially branded under the Ferrari name. This retrospectively gave the model a place within the regular Ferrari model range. Within the market of classic Italian sports cars, the Dino 308 GT4 occupies a specific position due to its collaboration with Bertone, its deviating proportions and its technical affinity with the further development of Ferrari's eight-cylinder models.

Characteristics and special features

The Ferrari Dino 308 GT4 is technically distinguished by its center-mounted V8 and by its four-seat body design. The model was built on a steel self-supporting structure and has a design that differs markedly from the more rounded lines often associated with Ferrari. The bodywork is more angularly detailed, with sharp creases and a lower, more compact impression than many contemporaries in the sports car segment.

The Dino 308 GT4 was also an important model in the transition from Dino to Ferrari as a brand name. The car was developed at a time when Ferrari was broadening its offerings and placing more emphasis on models with a wider range of uses. Within the brand's history, the Dino 308 GT4 is considered a technically and stylistically different model that at the same time provides a link to later Ferrari's with eight-cylinder engine and mid-engine configuration. In collectors' circles, the Dino 308 GT4 is valued in part for that combination of historical significance and distinct identity within the Ferrari lineup.

Summary

The 1975 Ferrari Dino 308 GT4 represents an important chapter in Ferrari's development, featuring a Bertone design, mid-engine and 2+2 layout. The model occupies an anomalous but recognizable place within the brand's history. To get a good idea of the lot, we recommend coming to the viewing day.
