The 1982 Renault Rodeo is an open leisure vehicle produced in the 1970s and 1980s as an alternative to more utilitarian off-road vehicles. Built by ACL (Ateliers de Construction du Livradois) in collaboration with Renault, the Rodeo was based on the technology of the Renault 4. The model was positioned as a light, versatile vehicle for recreational use and local transport, with an emphasis on simplicity and functionality.
The 1982 Renault Rodeo belongs to the later production years of the first generation of Rodeo models, which entered the market from 1970. Characteristic of the Rodeo was the plastic body mounted on a steel chassis, which contributed to low weight and practicality. The design was angular and functional, with removable or retractable parts depending on the version, fitting within the concept of an open leisure car. In total, about 60,000 units of all Renault Rodeo variants combined were produced.
Technically, the 1982 Renault Rodeo was closely related to the Renault 4, which meant that many mechanical components came from this volume model. This made the model recognizable within the Renault range of the period and allowed for wide parts exchange within the existing service network. The combination of front-wheel drive and a relatively tall bodywork gave the Rodeo its own position within the range of compact recreational vehicles in Europe.
Within the context of the early 1980s, the 1982 Renault Rodeo represents a period when car manufacturers experimented with light, multi-purpose vehicles for recreational use. This 1982 example falls within that production phase and matches the characteristic features of the model as offered by Renault at the time.
