Description

The Peugeot 403 Diesel 1960 is part of the 403 series introduced by Peugeot in 1955. The model was designed by Pininfarina and marked an important step for the brand in the postwar reconstruction. The Peugeot 403 was the first Peugeot to be sold in large numbers outside France and came in several body styles. In total, more than one million units of the 403 series were produced, making it the first Peugeot model to reach this milestone.

The Peugeot 403 Diesel was added to the range in 1959, making it one of the first mass-produced passenger cars with a diesel engine in this segment. Peugeot used a four-cylinder diesel engine developed by Indenor, which began to build the brand's reputation for durable diesel technology. The introduction of the diesel variant played a role in Peugeot's later positioning as a manufacturer of reliable diesel passenger cars, both in Europe and abroad.

The chassis of the 1960 Peugeot 403 Diesel is built to a conventional design with front-mounted engine and rear-wheel drive. The suspension consists of independent front suspension and a rigid rear axle with coil springs, a configuration widely used during this period. The bodywork is characterized by understated lines and a spacious design, befitting the middle class in which the 403 was positioned.

During the production years until 1966, the Peugeot 403 continued to evolve, with the diesel version becoming a permanent fixture in the lineup. The Peugeot 403 Diesel 1960 thus represents an early phase in the application of diesel technology in passenger cars from European manufacturers and marks an important moment in the history of the Peugeot brand.
