Beschreibung

The 1981 Mercedes-Benz 380 SL belongs to the R107 series, which was produced from 1971 to 1989, making it one of the longest-built models in Mercedes-Benz history. The R107 succeeded the W113 "Pagode" and was positioned as a luxury roadster within the upper segment. The 380 SL was introduced in the early 1980s as a variant within this series and was available in several markets, including Europe and the United States.

Within its model history, the 1981 Mercedes-Benz 380 SL occupied a position between the six-cylinder and larger V8 versions. The R107 series was characterized by a classic proportion with long hood, short overhangs and a removable hardtop in addition to the soft-top design. The design was developed in-house under the direction of Friedrich Geiger, who was also involved in earlier SL generations. The combination of comfort and representativeness made the 380 SL a much sought-after model within the range.

Technically, the R107 built on components from the then S-Class, which contributed to its positioning as a comfortable and solidly constructed roadster. During the production years, various further developments were made in the areas of safety and technology in accordance with the requirements of the various sales markets. The Mercedes-Benz 380 SL 1981 falls within the early production years of the 380 variant, which was delivered in a relatively limited period compared to some of the other versions within the R107 series.

The Mercedes-Benz 380 SL 1981 is today counted among the established classics within the Mercedes-Benz range from the 1980s. The long production period of the R107 has created a clear place in model history, with the 380 SL being a recognizable version within this series.
