The 1988 Volkswagen T3 Westfalia is a version of the third-generation Transporter, referred to internally as T3, which was produced from 1979 to 1992. Within this series, the Westfalia version occupied a special place as a factory camper provided by Westfalia-Werke, the German company that had been providing camper conversions for Volkswagen since the 1950s. The T3 succeeded the T2 and was distinguished by its more angular body shape and a further developed chassis concept with the engine in the rear.
By 1988, the Volkswagen T3 Westfalia was in the later production phase of the model. During this period, the models were technically advanced from the early builds, with several evolutions in engine and equipment levels throughout the total production period. The collaboration between Volkswagen and Westfalia resulted in an integrated motorhome concept where the interior was matched to the T3's body structure ex-factory.
The 1988 Volkswagen T3 Westfalia is known for its distinctive body with raised roof or lifting roof, depending on the version, and a functional layout aimed at recreational use. The T3 was the last Transporter generation with the engine in the rear, which gives it its own position within Volkswagen Transporter history. Worldwide, the T3 was delivered in several variants, with the Westfalia versions being among the most recognizable.
Because of its combination of passenger transport and recreational functionality, the Volkswagen T3 Westfalia grew to become a much sought-after version within the T3 series. The model was offered in multiple markets and over the years has become a fixture within Volkswagen's classic motorhome segment. This 1988 Volkswagen T3 Westfalia is offered as a lot within this auction.
